I am new to the site, and have been reading and finding tons of usefull information. I have a 96' F-350 7.3 w/Auto Trans and 231k. Last night when shifting out of 4wd, as I went to push the lever forward something gave. I can no longer shift into 4wd and the selector handle is loose and can be moved all arround. I am not sure if this is something that can be replaced or the whole t-case needs to be replaced. If it does need to be replaced, How do I identify the transfer case? Any help is awesome. I usually make it through the winter with 1 break down, It has been snowing alot lately and I have been shifting in and out of 4wd frequently. I would think it just became wore out and finally gave. Thanks for the help.
Check the shifter linkage under the truck. You probably just dropped the retainer and the arm came off of the shifter. Once you look under the truck, if this is not your problem, let us know what you see and we will try and help.
I agree, sounds like a linkage problem, there should be screws around the boot around the shifter, pull those and look down look up from the bottom and you will probably find your issue. Also be aware that you may be stuck in 4wd and not realize it, if the truck is jumping when you turn that might be the case.
I checked it out, It is the linkage. Part of it broke. Does anyone know where I can order this part online? The truck is not stuck in 4WD Thanks for the help.
It is the part that sits outside of the transfer case. It is attached to the shift lever that is in the cab and then there is a part that goes towards the back of the truck. It bolts up and it just seemed to break off. Let me see If I can get a picture up tomorrow.
Thats what I need. Is outside of the transfer case. The shift lever goes on the top. In the bottom left picture, the shifter would go in the top right "L" of the part. You can see in the top left, where the whole piece broke off.
Holy crap dude, you better lay off the steroids. Go to a local bone yard, that part is not PSD 'only'. IIRC it fits many year trucks as long as it's manual shift transfer case. ESOF (electric shift on the fly) type will not work.
7E069 is the part number in my factory repair manual. I'm not absolutely sure that it's correct but it's a good place to start.

It gets a work out when I am snowplowing I go in and out of 4wd countless times.
The manual that I downloaded I got the part number of 7210. That was from the link in your sig. I am looking in section Section 07-07C: Transfer Case, Heavy-Duty, Manual Shift
REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION
I have to put breaks on tomorrow. My brother is going to get a price check at the dealer that is 2 min away, Then maybe I can have him go to the junkyard because I think they close at noon. Thanks for the help.
