Are you trying to remove the ****? Rotate it till you see a cutout. Stick a small nail into that cutout and you will contact a spring loaded device that holds the **** to the shaft. Push that forwards or backwards (forget which) and **** will pull off. Headlamp switch **** and shaft comes off as a unit, btw.
Once the **** is off, there's a nut that holds the wiper switch to the dash bezel.
Remove one battery cable to prevent a possible short from any tools you are using!

on some vehicles that only works on the headlight switch, and even on the air and radio controls, there is a little tab on the **** behind it and you take a really small screw driver or hook tool and pull back on that tab and pull the **** off. and the hook tool looks just like that picker hook that a dentist has, just somthin easier than a small screwdriver to release that tab on the *****
Any tool or bent piece of metal that will reach in behind the **** can be used to pull the spring clip towards you. When the clip is pulled the **** will slide off the shaft.
For headlight **** instructions check the Read First: FAQ thread at the top of the 73-9 forum for info.

Most of the Ford headlamp switch **** and shafts come off as a unit. Just reach up under the dash till you find the switch. On the bottom of the switch, there's a spring loaded button...press that in..pull off **** and shaft.
you guys give great advise - i appreciate the info - better than any book
I have looked at the forums to find my dash light problems - it has seven bulbs, none of them working - all gauges working - lite switch working - will start with the fuse, looks ok but will test it - check connections at cluster
and then remove to check bulbs.

Rheostat in headlamp switch goes bad, you won't have any dash lights. Turning the ****, brightens or dims the lights. Replacing the H/L switch is a step forward after other tests have failed.

Just make sure the battery is dsconnected first and the headlight switch is in the ON position before depressing the button.

D3ZZ-11654-A Headlamp Switch (Motorcraft SW-1245)
As NumberDummy put it, Rheostat in headlamp. Had the same problem with mine just a couple of weeks ago (Thanks again, NumberDummy, Torque1st, Mil1ion, and all others that helped me out, as usual)
Just replace the whole switch. They're $11.99 on the Kragen website (as much as I dislike them, it's way better than the $40-50 you'll pay in store, and everywhere else).
