I have a 99 F150 extended cab, short bed. I recently had to use my 4wd and it kept popping out. It felt like the front differential was not engaging completely and when there was a lot of stress on it it would pop out.
Anyone have this problem before and if so how did you diagnose the problem? Any help would be appreciated.
Hello mrsteveo19761982, Do you have a manual or push button or switch 4x4 engagement system? Is the 4x4 light coming on and does it go out when the truck pops out? I sounds to me as if your front axle locks are not locking in completely. Follow safety procedures and climb under the front of the truck. Look at the front differential while 4x4 is disengaged and note the position of the lever connected to the vacuum module. It will be pointing almost straight down or slightly towards the pumpkin. Engage the 4x4 and move the truck 6 feet or so backward and forward. Look at the engagement lever again. It should be pointing more towards the passenger side of the truck. Then, with the wheels chocked to stop the truck from rolling either direction and in neutral and no emergency brake set climb under the truck and try to move the 4x4 lever more towards the passenger side than it is. You may have to grab the front tire and rock the truck a little to get it to move. If it does move then your vacuum module is not pulling the locks all the way in. If you have a dependable helper you can engage and disengage the 4x4 while you look at the lever move in either direction. Please try to let us know more about your vehicle when you post too. Engine size, transmission and transfer case type (manual or button). You can put this in your signature once and not have to add it to your post each time.-Let us know what you find out. Joe
Wow thanks for the information, just what I was looking for. I will let you know how it is working as soon as I get a chance to get it on the lift. Also I have a 5 speed manual, 4.6 liter and it shifts on the floor. Thanks for your help
