Hey guys,
I dont know to much about aftermarket parts, but Im pretty sure I need new shocks for my 2002 Explorer 2 door. I tow a decent size boat in the summer quite a lot with it. Any of you guys recommend some decent shocks I can buy online and have my shop install them. I went to a couple different places and they went from $300 installed (minake Gabrielle shocks) to $600 installed at NTB for Monroe reflex. I just want a shock that can take a decent beating because i put some weight in the back often and tow a boat with a 500 lb tounge weight.
thanks
Martin
Checker Auto will have all 4 reflex shocks with lifetime warranty for $200. $600 for these shocks installed is nothing short of thievery. $400 for labor, I don't think so! You can pick those shocks up at the store or order them online at partsamerica.com
Normally, I suggest Bilsteins, but that is usually for those doing the shocks themselves. If you are looking for something for a shop to install, you really can't beat Sears. They sell the Monroe Sensatracs for $39.99 a piece and I believe $25 for installation each (might be wrong about that part). Anyway, Sears and Monroe carry a lifetime warranty on the shocks and free replacement and installation.
thanks guys, for the info definitely helped me out! I have a sears right in my area. Anyone have a recommendation on which shock they prefer?
thanks
Martin
You might want to look into air shocks for the rear since you do a bit of towing. I put air shocks in my truck and I absolutely love them since for carrying loads or towing trailers.
I agree with Sears and buying Monroe shocks. A lot of times Sears will have a free installation special if you purchase 4 shocks. I would go with the Monroe Reflex instead of the Sensa Tracks if you tow. I have Sensa Tracks on my Explorer and they are fine, but I do not tow anything. If you have the money Bilsteins will offer a more "stiff" or controlled ride.
would you guys recommend me to get the bilsteins or the reflexes?? i dont mind spending a little more on the bilsteins if they will offer me a safer ride when towing.
thanks
Martin
I put the Gabrielle ultras on the front of my 03 sport and the Gabrielles with the overload springs on the rear. It fixed the sagging rear and drive great.
hey bud ....i have a 2001 explorer sport ...i just did the shocks go for ..rancho rs5000.
you wont be disappointed......but if your rear is sagging the shocks wont help that ..then you need an extra leaf..which i recommend...

I put a set of Rancho RS5000 on my 2000 and absolute love them, great ride no more top-heavyness and great ride quality!
wow now i have 2 more choices. My explorer is a 2002 sport and the rear is sagin big time. I saw the post where one of you guys recommended an extra leaf spring which makes sense. But if I can kill two birds with one stone do the Gabrielle's really fix the sagging issue?
They raised mine about 2". It rides a little stiffer but with less sway with them.
I think with the extra weight you put in the back they would help alot.
Dont use a shock to try to correct the rear end sagging problem! Fix the springs and your shock will be able to do its job better! Shocks control ride quality, springs control weight carrying capacity.

There isnt anything wrong with the springs. All the Sports look like they sag in the back.
