quits running

hi everyone
need some help with a 2001 psd f350. I did some searching on this forum but haven't quite come up with solution. When driving the engine quits running for like a second or two then starts running again. I haven't noticed if all the dash lights go off like it an electrical issue because it happens so fast and it doesn't do this all the time.
last time it happened chugged out black smoke than ran fine the rest of the way home.
any clues what is going on?

My guess would be the CPS (camshaft postion sensor)...at least that is what I would check first. Just swap out CPS..here is a link to the swap:

http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/cps.html

You can get the CPS from Ebay (about $50), IH dealer (about $100), or Ford (about $200).

Let us know how it goes...I carry a spare CPS and the tools I need to swap it out on the road.

You might also pull codes to see if a code was set.

no service engine soon light. Do I need a scanning tool to read the codes? Replaced the CPS two years ago. When it went the last time truck wouldn't start at all.

Yes, you do need to code reader.. If you buy one, don't get a cheapy.. It should be for Ford Diesel. Someone else here on the forum can sugguest a good one to get. I have a DiabloSport Predator tunable programmer which has a built in scanner that seems to work good. My 9 pin under the valve cover connector for our glow plugs and injector wiring came loose and the scanner pick up on P1316 code... (the connector is a bad design and comes loose when the plastic locking tabs warp) Your problem still could be your CPS even though you just replaced it..If it threw a code, it will still be in memory..

If you have a laptop that you can use, AutoEnginuity comes highly recommended from lots of respectable folks in here.

Another vote for AutoEnginuity. Much better than a programmer that has the code read built in.

replaced the cps trucks running, no hiccuping. Now to seach the forums on carrier bearings and vibrations. Looking into purchasing a code reader too. Thanks everyone
