do you have the keyless entry key pad on the door if so this is how to activate and deactivate auto locks.

1. Press 7/8 and 9/0 controls at the same time. The 5-digit code does not have to be entered to lock the doors.

Deactivating/Activating Auto-lock

1. Enter the five 5-digit code.

2. Press and hold 7/8 control.

3. Press and release 3/4 control while holding 7/8 control.

4. Release 7/8 control.

The horn will chirp once if auto-lock was deactivated or twice if auto-lock was activated.

this worked on a freestar but i hope it helps.

Just affirming what the other's have said, from my manual for the 2001 Explorer,
Autolock
The autolock feature will lock all of the vehicle doors when:

        The autolock feature repeats when:

            Deactivating autolock
Before following the activation or deactivation procedures, make sure
that the ignition is OFF and all vehicle doors and liftgate window are
            closed.
            1. Enter the 5 digit entry code.
            2. Press and release the 3/4 control
            while holding the 7/8 control.
            3. Release the 7/8 control.
The horn will chirp once if autolock
was deactivated or twice (one short
and one long chirp) if autolock was
            activated.
To reactivate autolock, repeat steps 1 through 3.
Autolock can also be activated or deactivated using the following
            procedure
            :
You must complete steps 1 through 5 within 30 seconds or the procedure
will have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you
            must wait 30 seconds.
            1. Turn the ignition key from OFF to ON/ACC.
            2. Press the power door UNLOCK control three times.
            3. Turn the ignition key from ON/ACC to OFF.
            4. Press the power door UNLOCK control three times.
            5. Turn the ignition key from OFF to ON/ACC. A horn chirp indicates the
            enable/disable feature is entered.

Unfortunately, none of this actually answers your question. I do not know of a way to make then autolocks autmatically unlock when the transmission is put back into park. I agree with you that it would be a nice feature.
