I have a 1978 Ford Bronco 4x4 that I have been working on for about 4 years and has come along quite well. One thing that I just cant seem to accomplish is a rear window that works correctly. The key switch is broken and I know that that one is expensive to replace unless any of you know of a cheaper one. (i priced it at something like $200 I think). The main problem is the window just doesnt go up and down well at all. I replaced the motor with a new one which helped some but still would slow down and stop on the way up (and down). I then replaced the spring arm assembly with a new one and still it doesnt work worth a darn. I dont know what to do. ANy thoughts?
Have you replaced the weatherstripping?
Believe it or not, hardened weatherstripping (that which is no longer pliable) is likely the culprit. I had similar problems a passenger side door on a previous Bronco. I thought it was a bum window motor. I'm assuming that the body is straight (i.e. the tailgate closes flush).
Mine actually WAS the motor, but you also want to make sure that you have grease on the regulators (the tracks where the metal slides back and forth, connected to the window). Also, I actually grease the weatherstripping, this also keeps the window from squeaking when it is rolled up and the weatherstripping is dry.
The weather stripping is new. The tailgate closing flush might be worth some checking. It is an aftermarket tailgate....thought I could save some money, what a peice of junk. It is thin and lightweight, the torsion bar spring actually caused the inside to pop out a bit. Anyway, it closes flush but the tracks might not lign up, shims maybe?
