I am doing a total repaint on a 78 bronco. I am using CNH Case tractor enamel paint with a compatible CNH primer. Even after two weeks of drying time, the paint will scratch easily with your fingernail. This is my first try at automotive paint work but I thought that tractor paint would be a little tougher than this. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
Yeah, the recent CNH paint is a little soft. I've painted a few tractors and lawnmowers with the CNH stuff. I've never tried hardener but plan to this summer to see if there is a difference. Otherwise, I've just been careful around the paint. I painted my rear bumper with the CNH silver last summer. It was pretty soft but eventually hardened. Then I backed into a piece of machinery and scuffed all my new paint anyway. Oh well, I'll get to play around with the painting more this summer.
when I bought the paint I told the salesman that I wanted everything that I would need to do a total repaint. He gave me the primer, reducer, and enamel paint. He didn't say anything about using a hardener but I'll go back today and see if there is a hardener for my type of paint.
I have never heard of that stuff, but it sounds like my results with rustoleum. The stuff is slow curing, and will take at least a month to harden, and probably 6 to be truly cured.
that sounds about right. I went back to where I bought the paint and asked about using a hardener. I was told that the paint I am using does not require a harnener and would take almost a month to fully cure if its just air-drying.
i'm not sure what ya'll mean by cnh(brand i assume) but the local "tractor supply" stores sell their brand tractor paint and recomend a hardener. i believe they advertise it as an "automotive quality" paint. i'd go back to the store and see for yuorself if there is a hardener and not talk to the salesman
