I got a 1986 E350 with the 460 motor. The temp gauge is reading high. I noticed that it reads even higher with the headlights on. I think it could be a grounding issue maybe at the fuse box or the instrument cluster. I can't figure out how to remove the cluster... after you remove the screws along the bottom. I was able to remove the panel where the head light and wiper switch was, but afraid to brake the cluster assembly. Can anyone guide me on this?
If I had a problem like that, I would check out the temp
sending unit first. Check and see if the wire to the sending
unit is frayed or the insulation cracked. Next, check to see
if it is solidly connected to the sending unit. If it is a flat
pin and socket connector, try using some steel wool or a
small piece of sand paper to clean and oxidation off of the
pin and reconnect it. Not sure where the sending unit is on
a 460... probably on the radiator or water pump. This is
much easier to get at and fix than a gauge. Just a thought.
I had the same problem with my '84 with 351w. On my truck, there's a grounding strap that goes from the back of the driver's side head to the fire wall. It was rusted through. Once I replaced it, the problem was fixed.

Good tip, Tom. I also have an 84 truck and will check this
strap to see if it is in good condition. If not, I will replace
it and perhaps head off a poitential problem before it
becomes a real problem.
1) grounded out Sending unit wire
2) Faulty Sending unit.
Is your fuel gauge reading normal ?
No the gauge is not pegged if that what you mean by pinned? It reads high about 75% of the scale. When you turn on head lights it goes to about 90% of the scale. It seems to me that the oil presure gauge seems high, but I think the fuel gauge is ok, maybe not acurate at low amounts of fuel however?
