Ernie, the drop down battery boxes work that way. They are on a hinge. When released the battery drops down and you access it from underneath the truck. Check out No limit, they make some pretty nice stainless ones. I recall seeing them on ebay also. Might get a better deal. Good luck.

I was going to put one in my truck but was kinda of nervous that the drop box would drop if I hit a hard bump, dropping my battery and everything else. I went with a custom made one from Bobco. I just pull my carpet back and access the cover.

Ernie, I bought one off of E-Bay and they are really nice. I put new floors in my '54 and did away with the hole/cover that was there. Don't have my truck finished yet but I do have the drop down box mounted and I dont foresee any problems. Hope this helps. Steve

Thanks guys you both have a positive influence on my decission i really like the box on e bay. With the input you guys gave me i have another question, when my truck is finished it will sit 2-4 inches lower i thinking, and now i wonder if the box will still drop low enough to access it or should i plan on leaving the access cover in the cab accessable as i was planning to weld it shut. i quess i am a long way off from that concern but i just thought the input would be helpfull for my futher decession. Thanks again for the info. Ernie

I just did some preliminary fit up with my SS drop box. I bought mine a while ago thru ebay/CPP. the style that I have has the ability to slide straight down, I don't know if they all do (past the lowered catch point). If it did not do that the space left for routing the exhaust would have been too limiting. I like the way that it is set up. I made the straps tonight to weld to the frame rails

Ernie, I wouldn't weld in the battery cover. I have mine on and merely put the new carpeting over it. If I need to get to the battery (and how often is that?). What I also did was install a battery cutoff switch which I mounted behind the bench seat. If I'm working on wiring, I just disconnect the battery at the switch instead of lifting the carpeting etc. If I do have to get to the battery, I just pull the carpet up and lift off the lid. You don't see the lid through the carpeting. As for the clearance on the battery drop. Even if you lower the truck, you'll have to lift the truck either way to get to the battery box. Unless your really skinny and can slide underneath. Hope this helps.

some Good points Imlowr2, I am not a skinny guy (235lbs) so ramps are a given at the very least to work on the underside of the truck at any height. I was skeptical about welding the cover to the floor so i quess i better leave accessable for good reason. The cut off switch is a must i think and also a set of accessable jumper lugs.

49 Willard after you get the straps welded in how about some pics!
