transmission help
1998 F-150 reg cab long bed ,5.4l 2wd
I just turned 200,000 miles on my truck the other day(still running and shifting strong), so i wanted to change the transmission fluid and filter, because who knows the last time it was changed.
So i went down to the local autozone to get my parts, and i got a 4R70W filter and 15 quarts of Valvoline Max Life dextron 3/mercon(says on the bottle is it also mercon 5 approved, as well as other kinds). When i got home i took the transmission gasket out of the box and held it against the pan and it was the wrong one, so im guessing that the transmission is the E4OD(20 bolts)? So tomorrow im going back and getting the right filter, but will the tranny fluid i bought work with this transmisson(i will also need about 4-5 more quarts)?

Hi Bobby82490,
You can read your transmission dipstick and it will say on it what kind of oil you should use in it. I use Mercon V in mine. And honestly (IMO) if it says Mercon V on it go with a Mercon V-Joe

Its says on the dipstick mercon, so that would mean i could use that oil? On the bottle it says dextron3/mercon
In the article on this website "changing ATF fluid in a E4OD and 4R100 transmission" is says not to use Mercon 5 just mercon, which on the back of the bottle it says it is also mercon 5

Hi Bobby82490, I would go by what is on the dipstick. Go for a straight Mercon if it says Mercon and leave the "compatibles" alone. Understand that this is just my opinion. But I have seen too many people put the wrong fluids in their transmissions and have some really bad reactions.-Joe
