I have a 2001 7.3 PSD 4X4 that will turn 200,000 miles this week. Is there anything that I need to be on the look out for? Anybogy I can tell to get some free pub? I am really happy with it, but I want a 2005 4X4 because I have changed jobs and I am not commuting near as far.
Hey Monsta,
There are some things on the 2005 that I really like. The pull handle on the driver side and I still want the factory DVD player. I also like the headlights, and the grill.
Good luck if getting rid of a 7.3 ya need a brain transplant 6.0 psd are like shooting dice ya could roll craps !!
V-10 i think is better than a 6.0 psd . I had a 1986 6.9 diesal years ago & put 472,00. miles on it no major engine work on it just injector pumps & injectors. 7.3 was a better engine than the 6.9, the 6.0 in my work truck Stink's & it's a 2004 F-450

John
John you can do all that for about $2,000. Up to you if you want to go through it or just get into a new one but the pillar handle is a simple install. Folks have been doing it since 2000 that I know if and using the passenger side one flipped upside down.
The front end is a bit more entailed but quite doable as a number of guys have done the swap. I bet you could get the parts fairly cheap if you shopped around and used eBay.
The factory DVD is too small (IMHO) there are better choices in the aftermarket. I had a 14.5" pulldown & a Blaupunkt DVD/TV player in my 03 Expedition that cost me less than $200 on eBay. Sound went through the stock setup, too. Nothing in this one as my kids felt it made them carsick watching TV while moving.
You choice, of course, but maybe you should do a cost analysis to see if what you get out of your proven Excursion, plus what you need to get into a newer Excursion will be more or less than what adding all that stuff would be. My guess is that you'd be ahead by adding the things you want.
I would love to know how to do the grab handle on the pillar now. I am 46, fat and I have arthritis in my left hip. That grab handle would really help me getting up and in. IAny help would be appreciated. I am mechanically challenged, (all thumbs) so I need to find somebody that can do it for me.
One downside to the 05's is they only have one visor. Many owners who thought they were upgrading to an 05 Excursion actually thought they were downgrading from previous models.
IMO, the cream of the crop X is a fully loaded 03 with the larger Navistar motor. Not sure if all black was an option that year but that's what I'd like!
The front end swap is farly simple I got prices from the Ford dealership a couple months ago and figured it would cost around $800-1,000 at Ford for the parts. You need the grill, bumper, and headlights and they bolt right up. There are a couple sellers on Ebay who are selling modified 05 front grills to fit without having to swap the headlights and bumper.
My wifes Excursion is about to hit 170K miles and having just swapped all fluids to synthetic figure it should be good for a while. Just did the driver side ball joints, hub assembly, power steering and lines, and new rotors and brakes all around. Put in four actuators two years ago and two have gone bad already, they were $60 each from Ford!!!
Things to check for are ball joints (lift up truck move wheel top to bottom) and hub assemblies. To check these you have to take them out and inspect them.

Oh, you were soooo close to a premanent repair on the door actuators. While the actuator was in your hands, ten more minutes you could have opened it up, and "tin-foiled" the little motor. If you are ready to try again, read up on the aluminum foil trick and spend about two hours this time for a permanent repair. It will be a whole lot cheaper this time around. About $.03 and two hours of your time.
