water temp gauge

hey all, this weekend i stripped the adaptor bolt on my aftermarket water temp gauge. i put the stocker back in since i have to go find a new one, but when i test drove it to make sure it was working properly, the gauge in the dash went to almost full hot. it had never done that before. i freaked out and cut the engine, but the valve cover was still cool enough to put my hand on without burning. so i restarted it and it went to full hot again, but then it gradually went back down to the middle - right where it had always gone. obviously this happened when the tstat opened up. im just wondering why the gauge reads full hot until then. it never used to do that, and i didnt hurt the sender in any way while it was out.

------

also, people have told me i should tap into "the dark green wire" on the back of my dash for my tachometer. heh well i have like 3, and theyre all right next to each other (granted, theres a good bit of dust back there so its probably harder for me to tell the difference). i was just wondering if someone could show me a picture of where they tapped into their wire loom so that i can copy it. or maybe give me the location of where mine should be. i looked at the haynes manual wiring diagrams, and it appears that the wire colors and locations changed a bit from year to year, so it is important that i say that i have an 83 F-250 with the 300, no ac, and the np435. Thanks in advance, cuz the truck likes to chug and hesitate and not restart when its warm, apparently because i have the tach signal wire tapped into the negative end on the coil. grrr!

You might have had an air pocket behind the sender, until the thermostat opened. If it does not do it again, this was most likely the cause.

There are numbers located on the cluster connector for each wire space. Numbers 1 to 18.

You want the Dark Green/yellow stripe wire in space number 11.

hope this helps.

thank you very much sir.

just for clarification. the big fat plastic plug with all the wires in it. if im not mistaken, there are 2 rows, right? 2 rows and 9 columns? so i want the second from the left, on the bottom row? actually....hmmm i think its numbered lol. ill have to see next weekend when im back home.

thanks again. makes me feel much better that it was just an air pocket or something and not a stuck-closed tstat or busted water pump. WHEW!
