Hi- I have a 95 E350 van with a 460cid. Water temp gauge doesnt move from COLD. I removed sensor wire and grounded it, temp gauge moved right to HOT-so Im assuming gauge and sending line is good. Note: just a little bit of coolant dribbled out when original sending unit was taken out. Replaced sending unit (located near distributor and having a one wire terminal) with one from NAPA. I added coolant in expansion tank and ran engine for 15 minutes - still no movement in gauge? Any ideas why it still will not work? Is it possible it needs a Motocraft replacement part? Ken
No, it doesn't need a Motorcraft part. I would check check the sending unit again.
Yep. And make sure that you got the sender for a gauge. If they gave you the sender for a warning light the gauge will not move. Did you use teflon tape on the threads? I have seen situations where the tape electrically insulated the sender from the engine.

I tried another new sensor, this one from Ford made for a temp gauge. Had the same poor result. Both sensors did come with a teflon thread coating. Manifold port has strong coolant flow out when old sensor was removed on cold engine. Radiator heats up and heater blows hot. Sender line when grounded makes gauge go to hot. Im stumped???
Hi,
Thank you for your advice. Would I verify ground from motor to frame or motor to neg battery terminal?
Thanks,
Ken
I'd verify the neg battery terminal to motor connection. When you manually ground the sensor, what are you using for ground? If you are using the battery, try the engine block. If you use the engine block and nothing happens, then you've found the problem. If it does work...hmm then I don't know...
I originally used the alternator bracket, which I believe is bolted to the block. Is there a definitive way to verify if the thermostat is stuck open. I get heat but it takes awhile for it to blow hot. Because I just got the van I dont know if thats a normal deal.

I've always tested a thermostat in a pot of boiling water, however if you remove the thermostat to test it, you might as well replace it. It doesn't sound like you have an issue with the ground on the motor.
