For the last few weeks, on and off, my truck has made a grumbling sound when turning left hard. Does with with hubs locked and unlocked (I have ESOF that don't work automatic anymore). It doesn't do it all the time, it takes a small abrubt change to the left to "set" whatever causes the sound, then it is audible. Goes away when driving straight, no sound.
Ujoints and ball joints done 15,000 miles ago. Is it possible that the u-joint could be binding up even with hubs unlocked, or am I looking at wheel bearings or bad hub needle bearing? I greased the hub bearings 3000 miles ago. To rule out a ford ESOF hub problem, if I remove the hub and just go for a jaunt around the block, will the wheel fall off, or is this a safe way to rule out a grabby hub?
EDIT: It seems to be coming from the passenger side front wheel, and ONLY when turning left.
Jacked up the truck, checked for hub bind, no binding on the front axeles. Grabbed the wheel at 12-6, and 9-3 and reefed it as hard as I can. I'm a big guy and could not get any slop out of it. Spun the wheel, and other then rotors dragging, the wheel did not make any bearing sound, and spun smoothly. No oil leaking from the backside of the spindle. I overfilled the tires 5 PSI just to rule out the tires rolling over.
Took it for a drive, and noticed that it made the same sound when turning lock-to-lock, after going lock-to-lock (With the steering wheel) twice, the sound would go away. Power steering fluid is full. I can even make the sound when applying the brakes HARD at a stop. So, I'm wondering if it can be as simple as my serpentine belt with 183,000 miles on it slipping on the pump? Or perhaps the fluid is getting old, the stuff in there is red, and I've been topping it up with the clear stuff, somoene perhaps at an earlier time put ATF in and it's shot maybe?
Sounds to me like your power steering pump. Maybee try and flush out the fluid with some new synthetic and see if that helps, I now it made mine quite down right away. Oh and our ps pumps are suppose to run off of atf, I know you mentioned above about atf toasting it but that is what suppose to be in there, so maybee that clear stuff your using is causing it to make the noise.
Okay, new belt did not fix problem. HOWEVER, I am now thinking mount of some sort, here is why. Engine lifts about 1 inch when torquing on it, a buddy came over last night and watched wile I loaded it up with brakes on. While he was in the passenger seat, he could feel the gurmbling coming through the floor. Possible worn drivers side engine mount or tranny mount? Tranny mount looks like it got oily at one time. Going to get it on the hoist this week. BTW, after the truck has sat for a few hours, going for a drive is quiet UNTILL AFTER I launched it hard. Will see what happens on the hoist when we can watch it, so maybe I have multiple problems, but front rolling stock has been ruled out. Was unable to reproduce the lock-to-lock steering sound, however with him holding his ear to the pump while going lock to lock, no problem there, maybe my extreme braking and working the steering was causing something in the powertrain to shift and make the clatter.
