ok thats a perfect reference...how do i know if the 351 is a C, M, or W? how do i know what kind of trans it is? i know its a four speed but is it a sturdy one or cheap? do i have a good rearend? its old and rough but the thing runs like a striped ape and feels solid as a tank so i was just wondering if theres anything speacial about any of the drivetrain but i dont know how to tell...any thoughts???

i grew up with chevy's and this is my first ford...its also the first 3/4 ton ive owned...maybe it just feels so tough cuz its a ford....???

It's not a Cleveland.

Now does the intake manifold have the T-stat housing on it or not?

with T-stat housing on intake = 351W

with T-stat on Block = 351M

valve cover bolts ...how many?

8 = 351M

5 or 6 = 351W

One is a drain the other is a fill, but yep.

Does it have "Borg Warner" stamped on the side of it?

What is the transmission code?

Look at the axle code and post it.

You will find the codes on the saftey certification lable.

the trans code is F...the axle code says 25 C 6 ...does that mean its a 3.73:1 ? i cant see any stamps on the trans...too greasy and dark outside...the borg warner's a pretty burly transmission isnt it?? i'll have to clean it up a bit and see if i can find any markings.

Code F: Borg Warner T-18 4 speed.

They are concidered bullet proof by many.

Code 25: Dana 60 - Capacity 5300 - Ratio 3.33 - Non limited slip.

Not sure what the C or 6 stands for.

hope this helps...

I'm not sure why either...and the why has to do with the fact that 25 & C6 are both axle codes listed for 1982. Two axle codes on same VIN plate = 4WD

OP stated his truck is 2WD.

C6 = 3.73 Dana

25 = 3.33 Dana

??

Yeah, and you wouldnt have mixed matched axle ratios on a 4wd either. Bad things could happen.

Since the C and 6 are seperated by a space, (or at least how the "Original Poster" has it typed) I would not conclude that it means "C6" either.

Does pose the question what the C and 6 means though.

ok, so directly under the word 'axle' is 25....so that's probably the code, but in the same box it says C 6...there is a space too...it looks just like this "25 C 6"...well its nice to know i have a 351W and a T-18...the truck felt the strongest of all the beaters i drove...its rough but does not run like a beater...think i'll keep it.

It's safe to say you have Axle code 25. Dana 60 - capacity 5300 - 3.33 ratio.

Just not what the C or 6 pertains to that axle code however.

Body parts are easily found if needed. Either at the sponsors or the wrecking yards.

It sounds like you got a keeper to me.

Both of those codes are from the rear axle warranty plate ID charts. The letter/numbers are listed first, the numbers only are listed next. Why would Ford list two different axle codes on the same line where the codes are placed on the VIN sticker? Because...this is standard practice on a 4WD.

25 is for the rear axle; C6 is for the front...book sez so.
