my truck empty weighs my gvw rating

whats wrong with this picture?

I get on the scales at the quarry and weigh in at 6800lbs. or 3.4 on the meter, with just me in it, I weigh 220lbs. my door tag says gvwr 6850 wtf.

one time i had four buddies with me, we're all at least 200lbs. and loaded up gravel for one of them, thats a 1000lbs of people on top of 2000lbs of gravel added to 6800lb truck, almost 10,000lbs on a 6850 gvw. and im still starting off in second gear, never had to use granny yet.

its a crewcab all stock, 360, 4x4, stock rims and tires, when i measure the tires with a tape they come out to almost 29 in. I got a homemade approx. 300lb. front bumper on it, but i figure it evens out cause i have no bed floor, my bed is pratically a duraliner sitting on frame rails, and crossmembers. dual gas tanks. Nothing extra on the truck like a winch or dual batteries yet, hell i dont even have a spare tire on the truck when i go to weigh.

I dont feel like im being dangerous and unsafe, truck feels fine no rubbing or bottoming out, steering, braking, all feel adequate under load, am i being dangerous, or have i not even scratched the surface on what these trucks can do. I used to have an 84 f250 4x4, and it could take some abuse, but not like this 76.

Check you registration VIN with the one on the door. If different, door has been replaced.

1976 F250 6 Cyl CC GVW is 7,500 lbs. (6 cyl only ref I have)

GVW = Gross Vehicle Weight

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

the vin #'s match, and i used a decoder for the rest of the plate and all the codes match what i have on the truck, trans, body, wheelbase, everything.

on the same plate it says type/gvw F260, and max gvw 06850, also my vin starts F26
theres also a sticker on the door jamb on the body side, most of the sticker is unreadable, but what i can see it matches up with the plate riveted on the door.

your 7,500 gvw rating sounds more reasonable even though its a 6, mine should at least be that much.

I think they may have been tinkering with GVWR in the late 70's for emissions bin classifications. My 76 F100 has a GVWR of 4900lbs, and the cutoff for requiring catalytic converters was 5000.

My dad used to run into same problem with his 77 Crew cab. As for hauling safley. You can haul a house with it. If your brakes are good you should have no problem hauling (though not legally) that weight and more. The last 70's F250 I had would haul 2 + tons coal with no problems and stop just as good as the 90'F350 I drive now. It all what you feel comfortable with.

My 1978 E150 has a GVWR of over 6000...but it is registered at 11,000.....

It weighs 4950 empty, on band road trips with 5 people and all the gear/merch it weighs in at about 7500......the back tires rub because they are 31x10.5, but aside from that it does just fine and still gets 10+mpg!

I think you guys reading your registration are actually reading up to what weight rating that license plate is good for.

over say... 10,000 lbs you need a commerical plate as opposed to a passenger vehicle plate.

In VA, you can get a "TRUCK" plate for anyvehicle with a CGVWR of over 7000lbs. You can also have said vehicle registered with regular plates like a passenger car. Only difference is the truck plate doesn't have to get emissions tested.
