I have an 89 f150 4.9 2wd truck, and im have issues with the charging system.
this is what its doing, if i charge the battery then run the truck the amp meter never gets above halfway if i turn the lights on or stereo, or anything electrical the amp meter jumps down to red again. it usually starts right after its warm but not after it sits all night.
Ok this is what ive done so far, replaced positive wire (it was cracked) replace neg terminal lead on battery (cracked also) cleaned all the wires on the switch thats on the fender wall (2 broke stripped wire and put back on).
now the question is what else could it be or do i need a new altenator?
Thanks for any help!
I just had my 92 F150 351 in the shop. I was having battery issues too but my battery was only a little over a year old so I suspected the alt as my problem. My mech says that yes, the alt needed to be replaced ($280 new) but that the culprit was the plug that plugs into the alt. It was fried...which in turn fried the diodes in the alt...which in turn killed the year old battery. Pull the plug and see if it's crispy or looks carboned.
took the alt to autozone, it was bad and i installed the new one. drove about 10 miles and itt hangs around 13 amps but when i tur the heater fan on it jumps way down but slowly works back up to 13. any suggestions?
