I would have to disagree on this one...they are a starting aid...nothing more. running for a prolonged time would seriously reduce there life. once the light goes out on the dash there out.
In older diesels yes. But since the late 90's they are deseigned to stay on for 20 seconds up to 3 minutes to enhance combustion for improved emmissions and smoother idle during initial cold weather start conditions. Staight from last issue of diesel power.
I have a COMMANDO RS/alarm and the RS does not control the OEM glow plug logic. The RS only applies power to the OEM glow plug logic circuit. My RS then delays the start cycle. My start cycle is set to delay for 20 seconds after the RS powers on. That gives the OEM glow plug logic time to cycle once. On real cold mornings (low teens), it takes 2 start cycles for the X to start. Normally it only takes 1 start cycle.
I have the Viper system and i think the delayis set up at 10 seconds. The only problem I have is the multiple start ups when it is cold. According to Viper, the 6.0 has a weak tach signal that the Viper computer uses to tell it that everything is ok. They will be adding a tach generator to the system so the truck won't shut off and restart on cold mornings. When it is warm, there aren't any issues. I love the mod since it came with a great alarm and keyless entry fobs. My XLT did not have an alarm or keyless entry.
Forgot to mention, I use the compustar 8000fm. It is a starter/alarm pager and has turbo timer which is also very nice. Just turn off key shut door set alarm and walk away and it will run for an extra couple minutes to cool down the turbo. Had it for two years or more with zero problems. It uses an adjustable timer also for the glowplug delay. I think I have it at 10-12 seconds? Works really good. In really cold sometimes it will take a couple cycles.
