Has anyone refinished their plastic Aerostar bumpers? My wife was hit last week. No major damage (not even cracked), but scratched and white paint on the rear bumper. I've been told that auto stores carry a bumper paint. I'm not sure what I'd be getting into. Any ideas?
Mine just became brittle and fell apart. It was never in an accident or even scratched, it simply decided to fall apart little pieces by little pieces.
Supposedly, according the Ford manual, they can be repaired and refinished with techniques similar to body repair. There is some special filler/bonder material applied then it is sanded and painted. A body shop guy affirmed this but neither he nor I have ever seen it done in practice. He says most shops just get a "refurbished" cover.
Like copper says, they get brittle. Mine has several cracks but nothing has fallen off......yet.

Dont be afraid of it ! the bumper covers are quite thick , you can file & sand big scratches down or fill with flexible bondo or knife stopper . Paint is also not critical, any silver type truck paint will stick. Put some undercoat for a better finish. I've done mine & it stayed on longer than the factory paint. It's still on infact, looks fine. For better durability put on some clearcote if you like that "wet looking" shine. You could also get another Bumper from a junkyard for about $75. If you are lucky it wont need any painting. Spray cans will cost $20 or so.
