I'm blind in one eye because I thought I was bullet proof and didn't need safety glasses. I took a piece of metal to my left eye. After four surgeries and months of adjusting I still find co-workers that don't wear safety glasses.
all you can do is spread the word brother. At work they drill safty in our heads all day long, its suprising how many people don't practice safty at home. Is it an inconveinance to put a pair of safty glasses on? heck no the inconveinance is spending 1.5 hours flushing my eyes out and going through some of the worst pain I have everfelt that could have been avoided if I had taken .002 seconds to put some glasses on. Or worst yet being blinded for life in an accident that could have been avoided all togeather.
I have been working industrial construction for 27 years (electrical,Union) and have had safety drilled into me the whole time.It has become second nature at home,as I stated in another thread the shop I am currently working for encourages everyone including the female secretaries to take home a pair of safety glasses and as many pairs of earplugs as they feel is necessary. (you should see the box empty out during the racing season)
Sometimes I look in the rearview mirror on the ride home from work and find I'm still wearing my safety glasses and hardhat.I'm sure I look odd to the other drivers.
You HAVE to protect your eyes and extremeties.Safety glasses, full face shield if grinding. (I have the canvas hooded type, comfortable, not as bulky when turning your head, more protection...nice)
Gloves are essential too.
Your FAMILY loves you, needs and depends on you, don't take it lightly.
I'm glad you're ok but think how bad it could have been.During safety orientation at one of the major auto manufacturers in Detroit years ago the safety man passed out eye patches to everyone and had us wear them for the hour.Try THAT and it will make you a believer,it ain't fun trying to make it with one eye, even on a temporary basis.Once we got past all the 'aaarrrghhh's it was a lesson well learned.
