Been there, done that. It does not feel good. Always makes me feel like an idiot, should have learned from past experiences. I have made a few trips to the eye doc to have metal shavings removed, but the worst I can think of was when I got some pollen in my eyes by blowing out the cooling fins on a tree cutting machine. When I woke the next morning, the whites of my eyes had swollen and my eyelids almost wouldn't close over them. Trip to the doc and some meds, and I'm back at it again.

I slack on it too. My problem is always, i'm under a car/truck and something (dirt/grime) falls in my eye. Now, I wear contacts so it really sucks now, also your hands are filthy so you can't really go digging in your eye. I too have a pair or two of safety glasses laying around. Do I wear them? Of course not. Hope I dont go blind one day.

Sometimes I feel like a dork wearing all my safety gear. Plastic face shield, ear muffs, and a paint resporator if I'm removing paint. But I learned a long time ago that it can happen to you, and in my case, it has. Glad to hear you're ok, I've had the same thing happen to me.

I've taken chances with it for years, even after becoming a safety guy (heck, I was even a compliance officer at OSHA for a few years) I must say I've been pretty lucky with it. What has turned me around and gotten me to wear my safety gear? having my kids help me in the shop. All it took was my son to ask me one time why he had to wear goggles when I didn't.
What an eye opener (no pun intended), now I do whats right and try to lead by example.

Yup, that will do it. Nice to have a little ''foreman'' around to keep an eye on you.

I come from the bottling industry. Lots of glass, plastic, etc... moving very fast. Lots of broken glass. Safety glasses have always been mandantory for me. I feel naked working without them, which brings me to my own stupidity story. A few months ago while replacing the water heater in my house, I was soldering the copper piping together (you guessed it, no safety glasses) when a little residual water in the line caused the molten solder to pop out of a joint and directly into the center of my eye. Thank God I wear contact lenses. The lens in my left eye stopped the solder from actually hitting my cornea, although it melted the lens and left my eye a little blistered.
I cannot stress the importance of eye protection enough. Lesson learned. I never work without them anymore.
Glad to hear you are ok.

They're called "Morgan lenses"............ Many, many moons ago I drove semi. I hauled lime and talc to the local paper mill. One afternoon the hopper underneath the trailer (used for blowing the lime into the silo's) blew up in my face, filling my eyes with lime. Good times, good times!

I spent one Christmas with an eye patch after taking a steel particle to the eye, while grinding, and then having it scraped. The pain was tremendous and the fear of going blind was even worse. From then on I have used eye protection. I took another steel particle to the eye when it somehow it bounced past the safety glasses. Another time I had the car up on jack stands to change the oil. While it was draining I was underneath, without eye protection, looking around and dislodged some oil and or salt laiden particles. You guessed it. The particle lodged itself in my eye. That time I had it scraped at the ED one day and it didn't get any better. The next day I went to my Optometrist and she drilled out the missed particles. What I have learned is that anytime you are under a vehicle or sanding / grinding wear eye protection. The type of eye protection is also very important. It needs to provide protection from all sides not just from in front of you. Tight fitting glasses with side shields, goggles, full face shield or a combination is needed. Your eyesight is a valuable thing protect it.

Not married, so no rings, but I have been guilty of the watch band between the battery cable and frame stunt. Really hurts when you have to cut a watch band off of your arm with side cutters.
