I have a '77 F250 4x4, I believe the truck was originally an automatic, but is now a 4 spd. I blew up the rear end, I broke the pinion shaft. I am trying to determine what rear end i have and what gear ratio so I can find a replacement. There are 44 teeth on the ring gear and 10 teeth on the pinion. I am not sure if it is a dana 60 or 70 and I can't find any tags on it anywhere. Anyone have pics of these two rear ends they can share? Any help is appreciated. Boog
boogan1, welcome to FTE, you choosen on cool site.
The gear ratio is 44 teeth divided by 10 teeth = 4.4 gear ratio.
Never heard of this particular gear ratio. Check for a gear tag on front differential cover, or rear differential cover.
I am currently 100 miles from where the truck is sitting so can't post the numbers off the vin tags. Sorry. I couldn't find any tags on the rearend anywhere. I removed the rear inspection cover and the pinion gear was layin in the bottom of the housing so I was able to get an accurate count on the teeth on it. I got the ring gear number by reaching as far as I could into the housing, referenced off the center of the spider gear pin and counted half around to the same place on the other side of the pin so basically half the gear, and doubled. If I am off it isn't by one tooth either way, so, 43 teeth or 45 teeth. Boog
I know the count on the pinion gear is correct at 10, my count on the ring gear should be within one or two teeth. I am guessing it is probably a 4.10, can't get any of the three numbers to come out right with a 10 tooth pinion.
