Political Correctness

I am posting this to let out a huge rant on PC. Why is it that everyone is offended by everything? For instance, the University of IL is losing their mascot, Chief Illiniwek. Why is this?? To me, this is one of the least offensive mascots I have ever seen. I say Bless You when someone sneezes and heaven forbid, theyre agnostic or an athiest. Say God in the Pledge of Allegiance and you have the ACLU cramming lawsuit after frivolous lawsuit down our throats. Really people, who gives a rats patoot. I should watch myself with that comment bcause Im sure there is a Rat Lovers of America that would love to skin me alive for that.
I think everyone needs to chill and relax with the political correctness. There comes a point when overly sensitive and "correct" is gonna bite us in the rear. People need to take things with a grain of salt and not let it get under their skin. 9 times out of 10 its not meant to be offensive. To me, I could care less what color someone is or who they pray to. Its all about attitude. And if you get offended by something so little, steer clear!
Ok, thats enough for me, I feel better now.

Mike

Do you think maybe decades of rudeness of people perpetuated PC ?

People play the Offensive card everywhere.

What do you think has caused this PC thing ?

Liberal interpretations of our Constitution throught the years. I think this Country is starting (or already is) to go backwards because of our twisted and profound interps. Being married to a public school teacher, it is amazing to hear the rules and guidlines public elementary school teachers have to follow. i.e.- (1) Can't put hand on student while saying good job. (2) No Thanksgiving parties, it's a fall festival gathering. (3) Can't call it a Christmas party, it's a gift exchange.
Don't get me wrong, love this Country and would not want to be anywhere else, but I would like to think at some point enough is enough. I hear what your saying 78stepside429. Maybe Hillary can make it better. lol

What do you mean by "starting to go backwards"? That confuses me.

The way I look at it if there isn't a compelling reason for a teacher to put their hand on a child, then don't...if there isn't a compelling reason to inject private religious beliefs into the public schools, then don't.

I really like these types of discussions. It would help though if someone could come up with a working definition for "Politically Correct".

This seemed somewhat helpful.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Political_correctness
Political correctness (often abbreviated to PC) is a term used to describe language or behavior which is intended, or said to be intended, to provide a minimum of offense, particularly to racial, cultural, or other identity groups.

In broader terms, political correctness refers to the implied or perceived expectation that it is improper to offend a minority or special interest group. In effect, political correctness marginalizes certain words, phrases, actions or attitudes through the instrumentation of public disesteem. [1][2]

To understand political correctness, it may be helpful to view the words independently, starting with the word political. The ultimate explanation of every political controversy is the disposition of power.[3] In a political context, power refers to the dominion of some men over others, or the human control of human life. Ultimately, it means force or compulsion.[4] Correctness in this context is subjective, and corresponds to the sponsored view of the government, minority, or special interest group. By silencing contradiction, political correctness entrenches the view as orthodox. Eventually, it is accepted as true, as freedom of thought requires the ability to choose between more than one viewpoint.[5][6]

Political correctness is not unique to any political party, special interest group, or language.
__________________________________________________ ________________

With this definition in mind, what is the alternative to politically correct language and behavior? Again, what is the alternative to politically correct conduct?

Don't take this to mean I advocate one thing or another. I'm just trying to explore the issue.

Funny thing about mascots...people have a problem with the indian ones, but I've never heard any protest about this one:

This is probably the most unPC, stereotypical mascot out there...A drunken, fighting Irishman dressed like a leprechaun.

^^^ That's a very good example/subject for a "comparative analysis". The Irishman mascot vs. the Chief Illiniwek mascot.

I'd love for some sociologist-type person to study and then explain why the Chief mascot is attacked as offensive and the other not. I admit I wouldn't even know where to begin with that.

Personally, I think what brought all this crapola on is peoples intolerance to others cultures. Before the 60's, things were predominately white and Christian in the media. Then you got the Civil Rights Movement really going in the early 60's and all these other cultures came out and about. With that occuring, there were the good people that didn't want to step on anyones toes and really changed who they were to accomodate everyone(and the bad that just bombed churches) Fast forward a few years up until the present and people want to kiss butt and cater to everyone else. Why doesn't everyone else try to cater back? Farelaneman, you might like this part. Now we have the immigration problem and instead of showing the illegals the door, we offer all of our liberties like insurance, drivers license, etc, etc. Hell, in WI, our boob governor wanted to give illegal immigrants grants and access to our universities before giving it to our own citizens. WTF??
But back to the subject, people just need to quit butt sharking and quit worrying what other people will think if they do something. Go have fun and pull the stick out, life will be a lot more interesting.
And last, the lawyers that start these lawsuits arent in it for anything but your money!

Basically the alternative is for one to learn to be:Respectful, Polite and Caring of one another.

IMO, the problem started when Minorities received all the attention over Majorities.
For Decades it was " The Majority Rules"..that isn't true anymore

I treat people with respect, but the PC BS is ticking me off too. It's bunch of people who were allowed to express themselves as children instead of being punished. The country is full of sissies. I could go on, but would probably get in trouble for not being PC.
