Rear u-bolt exposed thread length?

Rear u-bolt exposed thread length?
Hello all, How much exposed u-bolt is recommended on the rear? I am replacing my u-bolts and can cut down longer ones(18 inches), or use shorter ones(16 inches). If I use the shorter ones, I will have 3/4 to 1 inch of threads left over. Is that enough? Or, sould I cut down the longer ones?

Well 3/4 to 1 inch should be fine...Once those nuts are tight they should not loosen even a bit....your troubles will start a lot sooner than if those nuts actually left those u-bolts...
