300-I6, probably the best engine Ford ever put into a truck IMO. Not really powerful, but I just like it.
5.9 Cummins, the best diesel ever put in a light truck, IMO.
The modular motors (mainly the 5.4 and V10) are fine motors too, but IMO the 2V 4.6 is too weak for a full size truck.
Ive got a 2002 7.3 that would be my choice. I had a 2000 V10 which was great, no problems, and a 2004 6.0 that was also great... even after I rolled it.
I would say 7.3 for diesel and V10 for gas
7.3 no doubt. Yes the cps is an issue, but for 50.00 from ebay, and lesss than 10 min work.... for an engine with 185k. What you can create in hp and torque, and still beat in mileage, why go gas?
JackFlack you have now stirred the diesel hornets nest. Better spray on some diesel-off and prepare for the barrage... maybe say a little prayer to the lords of diesel that surely will be coming now
8.1L GM. Wonderful. If it weren't for the seats in that truck and the too small gas tank, I'd probably still have it. So far so good w/ my 6.0 PSD though.

Yep, the I-6 300ci 4.9L blows them all away! Not the fastest, but pulled ok.
The only problem is that 'freddydiesel' stated engines made in the past 10 years. This rules out the 300ci. The 4.6L & 5.4L are good ones. Didnt Ford have problems with the 6.8L V10?

Actually...the issues were with all the early Modular engines. The 4.6L, 5.4L, and V10 all fit that spark plug blowout issue. Another issue was piston slap...but according to FORD engineers...NO harm to the engine.
The 5.8l windsor in my Bronco seems amazingly solid, just turned 100k and I don't worry about it at all.
My old bronco just turned 162xxx miles 5.8L. The valve covers have never been off.
I would have to say the 5.0L (302) is one of the best Ford engines ever. It has been around since 1968 and people still buy them to put in there hot rods. Just think about how many 5.0L are still on the roads today.
The early ones had some problems with sparkplug blow out.
OUCH!!!! That would be the opposite of hail damage on the hood. Try explaining that one to your insurance agent.
Years ago I had a new 3.5HP push mower do that a week after I bought it. When I took it out of the box I never thought about checking the spark plug tightness. I was pushing it and next thing I knew I heard a loud exploding 'POP' sound and I heard something hit the chain link fence pole. That plug flew like a bullet; could of killed me. Then all was quiet, the mower was dead. Did not hurt the threads on the head. Put in a new spark plug and never had any more problems.
