E4OD fluid capacity

I just replaced my leaking transmission pan gasket and filter.

Does anyone know the refill capacity for a 1992 E4OD transmission w/o having completely drained the torque convertor.

The book shows 16 quarts, but that's gotta be absolutely dry. I can't find a refill number anywhere.

Worse case senerio I just start guessing, but I need to go out an buy the fluid, and I don't want to short myself or get too much and force another return trip.

I would guess 8 qts. When I put my B&M deep pan on, it took 11 qts and the pan was to add 3-3.5 qts capacity.

Just shy of 6 quarts. The whole thing drained is around 15.5 15.75 quarts.

Yes, about +/-16 quarts if you also drained the torque converter. Might need another quart or two depending on what type of cooler you are using.

Lots of oil.

Key to keeping your E4OD happy is to change the oil lots. Minimum every 30k if you do towing.

Seb...

I agree with Hamberger and if you don't get the biggest cooler you can squeeze in to fit. Get a temp gauge for peace of mind.

Hi Everybody,

I know this is an older thread but i have a question. The fluid has never been changed in my 1990 F150 (5.0L/E4OD trans). If i just take off the pan cover and change the filter, how much fluid would i need to add back in. I am sorry if this is a dumb question. i just wanted to be sure. Is it the 6 qts or the 16?

Thank you so much for the help!!!

Chris
