Ever since I bought my 1997 7.3 4x4 I have always had a issue with my pass side rear brake. The brake hangs up after it rains or if the truck has sat for a day or two I have pulled the drum off and cleaned everything and greased the star drive but it still does it any thoughts???
get a couple cans of brake cleaner if you havent already and spray VERY liberally all over in the brake parts. get it clean! brake dust could be so built up that it is causing things to stick. everytime i rotate my tires and have them off the truck i first hit the brake parts with a pressure washer and then with a good bit of brake cleaner
With the newer Fords being outboard drums they are easy to take off and have a look. You may need a new spring kit the old springs are getting weak and they are not retracting the shoes.
I replaced everything from shoes, drums, parking brake cables, wheel cylinders, and all the springs. I then found out that cheap brake shoes are grabby like that. I feel the whole parking brake system is not well designed and causes problems.
If I were to do it all over again, I'd go with a disk brake set-up and not look back!!!!!!!!!
I've seen drum brakes that arent adjusted up enough feel grabby. Make sure next time you have the drums off that the e-brake cables move freely and that you adjust the star wheel enough so that you can just fit the drum on with no drag when you turn it.
Something that is often overlooked with drum brakes is the baking plate (BP). The shoes need to have a flat area on the BP's to operate smoothly. There are lube points too. If the BP's have divots worn into them (most older one do) the shoes will hang.
After you thoroughly clean them pry the shoes away from the BP and apply a thin coat of hi-temp grease where the shoes touch the BP. 3 places on each shoe.
I have found many times the adjuster have been swapped right to left or found 2 LH threads or 2 rights. Make sure the star adjuster has the correct thread on the correct side. LH thread on the driverside, rh thread on the passengerside. Some are marked with a R or L and some are marked by the number of lines machined around the body. Two lines indicate a right-hand; one line indicates a left-hand.
every ford truck I have ever owned the rear brakes have always locked up sitting with wet brakes or moist from driving the night befor. I just got in the habbit of riding them as I pulled down the driveway to heat them up and dry them out.
Audimaster: even the new disk brake systems use a DRUM brake setup for the parking brake. and a brake rotor/drum is about $400 a side to replace. I found that one out.
