My 96 Bronco XLT with 5.8 and 4" Procomp lift, 33" BFG's
gets about 11.5mpg city and 16mpg highway(when I'm usually
towing a trailer with 2 jetskis)
I have the stock gearing 3.55, and a K&N filter.
I usually drive about 50mph in the city (that magical
5mph over the speed limit) unless traffic ticks me off
and then I will get on it. On the highway I'm usually
pretty good at keeping it at 75mph and I like to pass on
hills so I could probably get a little better mileage if
I taped a little block to the back of my pedal!
Ok peoples, I here y'all whinin' 'bout 11-15 mpg. Last time I checked, my '78 bronco with 351M 2bbl (needin adjustin') was getting about 7 mpg. I need to do a rebuild so I aint bitchin' 'bout it now. I know that when I get done with what I want, I will be gettin' at least 12 so damn near double sounds good to me. I was looking at www.projectbronco.com and found that I have a BIG bronco. They were made in 1978 and 1979. In 1980 ford reduced the size a bit and increased the aerodynamics a bunch. I believe if we want to drive GREAT BIG air dams we ought to suck it up and pay at the pump. Oh, and that guy that made the comment about $200 a month in gas over $500 in car payment, EXACTLY. Besides that, my Bronco is beat to death and still keeps going and going and going. (A side note, I slid off the road the other day and dropped 'bout 7 feet. Pissed of my co-worked when I told him his '90s Explorer wouldn't have survived. I only needed to be pulled out of a bog and then I drove out of the hole and been drivin it ever since)
dude i am jealous of all of u my 1988 only gets 9 on a good tank and 7-8 on a normal or bad one hey u have any pointer for me yeah and i also know i need to stop racing but imports are just sp much fun to beat.
In response to Chaser's post: I did throw a Jacob's Omni-Pak on my '96 (with the 5.8), and it seems like it boosted my mileage about 1-1 1/2 mpg. I was running between 11-12 before, and now I am consistently between 13-14 mpg. That's with 35" tires. If I could get it up above 15, that would be great. Guess I need some more mods.
I put the Jacobs Off-Road Ultra Team kit on my 86 302EFI with AOD and I am now getting 16 mpg all around in town and commuting. It is the best combo along with the K&N and good free flowing exhaust.
I don't use my 4WD much. Can removing the front drive shaft yield any more MPGs. My 96 EB has a roar ? front diferential. I have replaced the front wheel bearings. It has 110K miles. Fantastic truck.
I am glad someone is showing some common sense. If the highest paid engineers in the auto industry could have figured out a way to gleen a few more miles per gallon out of the engine without sacrificing power they would have added it to the design.
