Is the 9.75 ford rear end comparable in strength to the dana 60? If i remember correctly the ford is a 9.75" ring gear with 34 spline axles , and the dana 60 is 9.75" ring gear with 30 or 35 spline axles. But the dana 60 has much more aftermarket parts/accesories available.
I really don't have any definite answers to that question but I can say that I haven't seen any blown up 9.75s. I think the most I've seen wrong with one is bad pinion bearings.
A Dana didn't use C-clips to hold the axles in. Those have the potential to cause problems but rarely do. The Dana full float or bolt in axles will be stronger but I wouldn't want to guess how much.
What are you doing with your truck that you're wondering about that?
I told my friend that my axle in my truck, is about as strong as a dana 60 , but its not nearly as popular as the Dana and the ford is semi-float with c-clips which can make it weaker than a full-float axle. And he didnt believe me.
The D60 rear axle is actually one of the weaker 3/4-1 ton axles. In fact, most people building an off-road truck will swap out the D60 rear for something stronger (14B, Sterling, D70, D80....)
I was actually going to swap in a Sterling 10.50 into my truck for a big block build...But I think Im going to scrap that idea and go with a mid-'90's truck for the simple bolt-in factor of a 514.
