97' F150 4.6 156k problem shifting gears lately. Can really notice it shifting funny when rpms low, like when I'm going light on the gas peddle. Problem really noticable with over-drive gear while going through hills of Pennsylvania over weekend. Shifts much smother if I put it to the floor while accelerating. Changed fluid at 100k, checked fluid and it's at correct level. Thanks for any advice.
I have a 99 4x4, Not exactly sure if its the same thing, but a while back my truck was feeling like it was shifting funny when shifting into OD, while at lower speeds, say around 50 mph, and it would miss a little at this speed, but when i pushed the accelerater a little harder and made it kick out of OD, it would then shift and drive good, I took mine to AAmco to get it put on the machine, for $40. they told me my trans was fine and i had a bad spark plug or wire, so i changed them and it was fine ever since. The wierd thing was i had no check engine light on and i took it to 2 other mchanics and they both thought it was the trans. but there machines wouldnt tell them what the problem was, no codes came up on theres. OH one more note is that my spark plugs and wires were only a few months old at that time, but i changed all of them again just to be sure. hope this helps.
My 97 is just starting to do the same thing. When getting ready to change the fluid and filter I noticed that tranny fluid was around the bell housing. This means the pump is going bad and bleeding off pressure because of the seal leaking. Which makes it feel like it is jerking or hunting for overdrive between 50-60mph when you ease into the speeds but shifts fine if you put the pedal to it.
Checked with local Ford dealer for tranny price only today. A bit over 18 hundred $$ with old tranny for core turn in. Without tranny core to turn in add about $600.00. Not that bad with a 5 year 75k warranty.
I checked with Advance and they are in the range of 14-1500.00 smackers. It is the weekend so they could not give me any details on the warranty. They also said about 2 weeks for it to come in VS next day with Ford.
I have the deep sump tranny pan installed on my truck so I put two bottles of Lucas transmission fix in to see if it helps for the time being. Can't hurt if I am going to change the trans out in a short time. If it makes any improvement I will let you know.
After about 50 miles with the Lucas fix put in with fresh fluid, the tranny is acting much better but not perfect. I went ahead and ordered a new tranny with Advance Auto. 4R70W3082 Tranny with Torque converter, 2year/24000 mile warranty was $1432.00. This was a different Advance than the other one I checked with the first time. The parts guy was more knowledgeable and said it would be around 5 days to get here. ($375 core charge) The parts guy pretty much guessed what I was there for as soon as I mentioned the transmission. He told me that 96-97 F150, Expedition and Explorers are starting to show up in numbers with the pumps going bad +- 200k miles. Maybe Ford will take notice and do a recall???? We can only hope.
