I recently changed my '87 F250 from a T18 manual to a C6 automatic. The one I put in is from an '87 one ton van with 170,000 miles on it. I figured with that mileage it could use a rebuild before I installed it, but the weather was bad (I do my car/truck work outside), so I went ahead and put it in, hoping it would make it 'til spring when I would work on it. Well, the transmission is working perfectly, and I'm thinking about not rebuilding until I see some hint that it needs it. On the other hand, 170,000 miles sounds like a lot for an automatic transmission. Not knowing much about autos, though, can somebody give me an idea of how many miles is typical for a C6 to get before rebuilding? Thanks.
It all depends on the life the tranny saw before you go it. If it wasn't beat on and serviced, I would leave it alone. Look for a spare tranny and rebuild it and have it waiting to go in when this one goes bad.
If the person did not tow or race with it and changed the fluid on a regular basis (every 20-30k) 300k miles would not be unexpected. I would follow RTM's advice.
I appreciate the answers. When I bought the c6 that I put in the truck, I also bought a spare in case I needed it. I'll rebuild it as you suggested and have it ready. Meantime, I'll drive on with the one I've got in. Who knows? Maybe I'll get lucky and it'll do the 300,000. As little as I drive, that'll be about twenty years.
