Hey guys i've been looking for a 5 speed tranny for my sons truck,it's for a 1988 F150 4x4 and i've been finding a few tranny's M5R2 that fit 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive, does the tranny i need have to only fit a 4 wheel drive or what, with these M5R2 Tranny's does the same tranny fit both 2 and 4 wheel, whats the deal with these things?any help would be appreciated.
The 4wd tranny has a transfer case bolted to the back of it. They're different housings and they won't interchange. Whoever is telling you that they have a tranny that will fit both 4x4 and 4x2 trucks is lying.
Ditto what Andy said. The 4x4 has a totally different tail shaft (like non-existant) from the 4x2. I have the M5 on my 4x2, and the tail shaft adapter adds quite a bit of length to the tranny. Just guessing, I think about a foot or so. Dunno what the M5 looks like for the 4x4, but another guess is, if the same gearbox/bell is used, then the tail-shaft adapter should probably come off, and the fit look a little closer.
Oh yeah, these are M5ODR1's, not R2's. R2 was used for 'stangs and 'birds. Totally different shift kit on the R2. Goes in through the tail-shaft adapter on the R2. I found that out looking at some possible mods for my '86 Thunderchicken.
