fuel filter

My 94 fuel filter is shot and needs removal. What is the name and part # for that special tool I need that disconects the filter from the line? The one that spreds it apart like an alligators mouth. Do these tools work well? Do I really need to depressurize the lines or can I just wing it?

I would recomend releasing the pressure in the lines. The tool you need is kind of a tube with a split in it and a mushroom head on one end for you to hold onto. You just push it into the fitting from the filter side until it seats and pull the line out. It can take some time to get the position just right so be patient. Any parts store should have the individual sizes or a complete set. I think the set I got was about 12 bucks and included all the sizes of that style and the hinged two piece for a/c lines and other fuel lines as well.

pull the fuel relay in power dist. box or trip fuel shut off switch behind the pass. kick panel.

wear goggles because no matter what you do still gas left in line.

I've had best luck on these trucks with the cheap plastic tool versus the fancier metal ones. Most parts stores should have the set for under $10.

Before you try to get them apart, blow out the fittings with compressed air and spray some penetrating lube in them. One little piece of dirt or gravel usually keeps them from coming apart.

My set is one of the plastic ones too. I think it did have one or two metal pieces included, but they wern't the ones I had to use. It just took me a little persuading to get the clip inside the line to give up its home. I never thought about blowing it out with compressed air, that is a good idea.
Isn't too bad of a job, just be patient.
