My friend and i just pulled an engine out of an old ford bus that was used to haul apple crates in an orchard. We bought the bus for 200 bucks at and auction and pulled the engine and scrapped the bus for 500 bucks. The engine is a ford 428 and ran really strong when we drove the bus home. I have a few questions about this engine. How common was this engine and what was it normally used in? What potential if any does the engine have (HP and torque wise)? Are parts readily available to modify this engine? I am new to fixin up engines but think i got a good deal on the engine considering i made 300 bucks and got a 428 engine free after scrappin the bus. any replies would be awesome, thanks a ton!
Man thats a new one on me.....I have never heard of a 428 in a School bus...But have heard and seen the 361 and the 391's in them....
IF indeed it is a 428, there are plenty of parts to be used from stock replacements to Ultra high Performance stuff...only your wallet will be the limiting factor!! LOL.
I'm in the process of building a 463 CI CJ.... I'll be throwing about 10K in this build..So get ready! LOL
The 428 is somewhat common in some forms. But like Russ said not stock in a school bus if it is a 428. Depending on the year 428 blocks can have a "A, C or S" among other sandscratches on the back of the block. That is about the best external hint to a 428 block. If you don't see that it could be a later 70's block possibly. The 428 crank will have a IU or IUB on it or you can just measure the bore and stroke. 4.13 bore and 3.98 stroke is std 428. This site is a good one to help ID 428's. www.428cobrajet.com
