Front axle spline movement?
When I replaced my front hubs recently I noticed at least on one side, I could move around the spindle left/right, up/down stiffly after the auto lock hub was removed. I was just curious if that was normal, or if it meant a seal or somethig had worn? Plus with the wheel removed lookng in behind the brake/hub assembly I could what looked like a weather seal ring floating freely around behind the universal joint going into the axle itself. Is that a bad sign too, or no its normal to have a shred of seal break free like that? If it were bad, wouldn't I see a fluid leak or something?
I've got this weird thing about my auto hubs acting like they want ot partially engage 4x4 while in 2x4 (auto) position. If flip my ESOF switch to 4x4 it goes away until I switch back to 2x4 then moments later it grinds again?
With the ESOF switch in 2x4 is it applying suction or pressure or neutral? How about when switched to 4x4? Just trying to narrow down the culprit.
The seal your talking about keeps dirt out of the axle tube. There is another seal inside the diff to seal the gear oil. I know there has been a pic posted of that the seal. Maybe someone can find that pic and post it up again.
Nothing is applied when in 4x2. When in 4x4 vacuum is applied to lock the hubs.
