Please help. I bought a 1999 F550 7.3 PSD with 158k miles. Truck will not start and has no check engine light and code reader shows no codes.
Previous owner said he slowed down to make a turn and the engine died and would not start after that. I checked all fuses, they are good. Checked fuel pump, it runs and will pump fuel out of filter water drain valve when I open it up. I replaced the cam position sensor with a new one from International (half the price of a sensor from Ford). I checked the oil level in the hpop, it is within a half inch from the top. Engine will turn over but never tries to fire. I checked glow plug relay and also ohmed out all glow plugs, they are ok. I put my volt meter leads on the wires to one injector to see if it would get 110 volts DC while cranking engine, I never saw the meter move. I don't know when the oil was last changed but it looks like it needs it. I made sure there were no obstructions in the exhaust system. I don't know if the PCM can be tested out of the vehicle or if I would have to tow the truck to a dealer to have it checked. Can anyone help me?
Thanks for your quick response. I don't know how to connect my guage and hose to check the icp pressure. I once owned a 95 F350 that had flare type connectors that allowed me easy hook-up, but this 1999 model doesn't have flare connections.
I did unplug the icp connector and attempted a start but still no luck.
I don't know how to do a buzz test or what test equipment is needed for that. I hope I don't have to tow it to a shop because I live 40 miles from the nearest dealer.

Which wires did you check (UVC or the ones outside) if they were the UVC's then you could have a gasket or connector issue. If they were the ones outside the VC either the 42 pin connector over the driverside VC has a real bad short or the IDM may have gone out. I would also repeat this for each injector instead of just one.
I only checked wires to one injector, near the plug on the outside of the valve cover.
Maybe tomorrow I can check wires to other injectors. I will check ther 42 pin connector as well. Is there a way to test the IDM? I still don't understand why no codes are stored.
Thanks to all who are responding. All of the warning lights come on when I first turn the key on, including the wait to start and the check engine. After the wts goes out I crank it over but it won't start. I can see the tach needle move a little while it's cranking. I wonder like some of you have said if it could be the pcm or the idm. I could take these modules to Ford but I don't know if they can test them out of the vehicle.
I live in Georgia. If the hpop failed, wouldn't the injectors still receive a 110 volt signal when you unplug the icp connector to make the pcm go into the "limp" mode? I've been thinking the problem is electronic, but I really don't know. Does anyone know if the pcm and idm can be bench tested?
I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM!!!!!!!!
My '01 F250 is at the dealer. Same scenerio. I have also replaced the batteries, the PCM, IDM, CPS, and the back pressure sensor (I didn't, the dealer did). The PCM throws no codes, and now after almost 2 months the dealer "cannot duplicate the problem". I'm gonna take em to court for a refund since the truck still has a proven intermittent starting problem. I hope we can figure this out...
I'm having the same problem with my 2003 F350 -7.3L. The Dealers in my area say you have to Bring the Truck in, which will be at least a week before they can even look in the general direction of my Truck, in other words they will not even acknowledge that my Truck is there for a week, no matter how simple the diagnosis may be. Obviously every one needs their Truck, so it wouldn't be fair to put someone in front of someone else, I guess I understand that, but I need my Truck worse than anybody else.
My Truck has same symptoms, but I knew I had a Bad PCM, so I replaced it. I don'tg think yours is bad. I replaced the CPS, no help. Tomorrow, I am gonna install a IDM, because, I am not getting 115vdc to my injectors and they have to get it from the IDM. That sounds pretty clear on what the problem is. I will know for sure tomorrow. I posted a thread for help yesterday under, J2534 Pass Thru Device, because I purchased a New PCM that needs to be Updated with the New Calibration, but these problems sound like the same thing, so I will be checking back for your conclusions and let you know if NEW IDM solves my problem. Good Luck and Alan amiller93 has responded, sounds like he's been around these trucks for a while.
Hey pngrantham, Thanks for the info. I will be waiting to hear your results. I'm not sure if the pcm is talking to the idm or if the idm itself is bad. How did you know your pcm was bad?
1997F-350, I havn't replaced the ipr orings. I figured my problem is electrical. Shouldn't I get voltage to the injectors even if the orings are bad?
