Replacing 04 Explorer Tires. ?'s

I have an 04 Explorer. It has 245/65/R17 stock tires. I want to put 255/65/R17 on the stock rims. Can anyone tell me if they will fit the stock rims? The only other option is 245/70/R17 tires. I am replacing the stock BFG's with Dueler Revos. Thanks.

Not to sound like a wise guy, but.......wouldn't your tire dealer be the best source of answers to your questions? His opinion will be worth more than any advice you get here; he's the one who will warrany his product.

Let us know what you find out, in case someone else is thinking about different tire sizes on stock 17" rims.

If you go with 70 instead of 65 you will be a little narrower than stock and you should be OK.They will fit with no rubbing problems unless you go offroading and go over some real rough terrain. also are you getting "P" rated or "LT".

I would guess they would fit but why change? The only places those changes might be noticeable is when you floor it and you have less get up and go due to the larger circumference.

they will fit fine. they are a little wider (10mm) and a little taller. your speedo will be off a very small amout but i would not worry about it.

ummmmm..... 70 is taller than 65, but width would be the same if they are both 245's.

245 - mm width
65 or 70 - Wall height as a % of width
17 - Inches diameter of wheel

Of course these are general guidelines and not "Engineering Spec" measurements, and different manufacturers can have slightly different sizes with the same notation.

Correct...

255/65 will probably get the speedometer closer to true than the stock, and you shouldn't have any problems with them. They will be just a little bit wider and a little bit taller.

I haven't had a Ford in my family yet where the stock tires didn't run fast against the speedo. All Ford's I have had - I have changed to the next size up and they have trued the speedo closer than stock.

245/65 is 29.53" tall
245/70 is 30.50" tall
255/65 is 30.05" tall

Here is where I got the dims from: http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCal...?action=submit

These are also generic size specs also. There is always a small variance from manufacturer to manufacturer and also from tire type in comparison.

Hope it helps...

Thanks for the replies. My only concern is the width.I want to make sure it doesnt rub the shock. There is very little space between the OE tires and the shock now. The 255's are only 1" wider. the height isn't a problem, just the width. thanks. Going to the tire shop today.

I think the 255's will be fine , except for very extreme turning , there will be a little rubbing....

10mm wider is actually less than 1/2".

On one side it will be less than ¼ inch, cause the width will be over both sides of the center.

My wife also has an 04 Explorer 4x4 we just put 255/65 17's on it. They work fine. We had hoped to go as wide as 265 but 265/65's are too tall.

You have no problems with tight turns and rubbing?

She drives it daily, to date she hasn't mentioned any problems with noise or rubbing. I'll get under it tonight and see if I see anything.
