I am going to change the water pump (it seems to be leaking out the weep hole ) i have a few questions first the bolts that hold the water pump on are they suposed to be the same ? i have some that are a 10mm i think and some others that look different that are 1/2 inch ?? If this is not normal i would assume that it has been changed before and someone lost the original bolts .My truck only has 165,000 and that would mean this is the second time the water pump has been changed ? with only 165,000 miles is that normal ? Second is there a torque spec for the bolts ? or a patern they have to be torqued ? Thanks for all the help !!!
there are 2 different lengths on the water pump bolts. so don't mix them up. there is a torque spec but i can't find it right now off the top of my head. If i rememeber right isn't it an o ring style gasket in there?? You might want to look into doing the international water pump conversion with coolant filter on it. i did mine 6 years ago and haven't had a lick of problems with it at all (knock on wood)
There are 3 different lenths. All should be 10 mil. head. Criss cross pattern when tightening up. I start in the center and work my way out. Torque is 15 ft lbs. The previous owner probably stripped out threads and used a bigger bolt to get bite. I think most of the bolts go into aluminum so don't overtighten. I used my fingers to very lightly cover the round gasket with silicone, when tacky press into slot. 10 min later the gasket will hold on pump and wont fall off when trying to assemble. Start in middle and work your way out in tightening in slightly tighter torques. About 5 times to reach recomended torque.
Good luck,

Yeah i figured that the bolts should be the same so that means this is the second time the pump has gone is that common to have to change the water pump twice with only 165,000 mile ?
masterc16 be sure and get or buy the clutch fan tool. It will make the removal of everything easier. Ask me how I know. I used a bit of vaseline to hold the rubber oring. The mechanic I used the first time used silicone sealant and it leaked. So I did it myself and did it right and have 174K + on mine now.
Thank the pulley the belt sits on is there any thing to know about with it ? or do you just take it off and put it back on ? does it need to be on a certain way to have it balance ?
Make sure your belt tensioner is good and that the fan is not off balance, this will ensure maximum life of the water pump and your other pulley driven accessories.
The bolts are different sizes, and the new pump comes with new bolts.
Napa has a good water pump at a fraction of the cost of the OEM. While your there, change ouy your thermostat too.
Napa has the fan clutch wrench for around 30 bucks, and it works well.
BTW, after I did my water pum (156K miles), my belt tensioner was about shot. I just put a new one on today along with a new CPS (wooho she idles good again!)
Millenium Ford is a sponsor of the site here and sells the OEM parts at a discount. I you want the part number for the blet tensioner assembly I have it.
Was around 80 bucks through millenium Ford. http://www.y2kford.com
(I can't beleive I finally got to offer advice here instead of always asking questions. You guys here have taught me so much!! Thank you!)
