I am looking at purchasing a 2003 Expedition 4x4 with a FX4 package. I am trying to determine what gear ratio and if the rearend is open or a limited slip diff.
The axle code on the door ID tag is H6. Anybody know what this means.
The truck does not have the traction control on the console such as the Eddie Bauers 4x4s do. Unfortunately, the truck is several hundred miles away so I cannot go crawl underneath it and look for the tag on the differential itself.
I have been on the computer for hours today and I can find nothing on the axle ID numbers.
I think no matter whether you have LS on not, the ratio is 3.73. Don't think you can get the LS with the traction control. My '03 EB WITH traction control has I6 as the axle code. It does NOT have LS differential. So, since the truck you are looking at doesn't have the traction control, it probably is LS differential.
I assumed based on all the info on the web that I could find on the Expedition that the gear ratio was a 373. The only other gear ratio that I could find for an 2003 Expedition was a 355 but that was for a 2 wheel drive model. I also assumed that the Eddie Bauer with traction control had a LS rear end so maybe the traction control is a function of appling the brakes to the wheel that are spinning.
I have a 97 Explorer Eddie Bauer 4x4 and I had a somewhat easier time finding the axle code. It has a 411 posi and 95% of the Explorers are 373 open. My Explorer just handles so well on snow packed and ice packed roads.
Have you ever had any problems with you front or rear Diff. ??
I have a neighbor who had a 2003 Eddie Bauer 4x4 and it had a LS rear and he had the clutch pacs replaced twice by the time he had 36K on it.
I believe the LS rear ends would defeat the purpose of Traction Control, so no LS with TC. I haven't had any probs with the differentials, but have heard of others when they first came out--lots of input in early 03 model year about this. My wife only has 35K on hers, and we never have snow/ice to be concerned about. The LS on Fords is a joke for lasting any time at all--the clutch paks wear out quickly, and thus no limited slip. My '04 350 went early, but with 4wd I wasn't worried about it. But recently I almost couldn't pull a load out of slight mud area due to rear axle slippage.
There is usually no problems when the clutches go, just no LS anymore. Sometimes under load on a sharp corner you can hear a chatter when they grab an let go, but my wifes truck has not shown any of this. All you get is some filings in the bottom of the diff on the mag plug. If you get this truck, you might want to change the fluid out right away. Be sure to use synthetic AND prob use the friction modifier no matter what the oil container says.
I have H6 code with mine. When I first bought it with about 47000, the clutch packs were chattering a bit. Changed the rear fluid with synthetic and friction mod and the noise has gone and hasn't come back yet but I'm going to change the fluid again since i'm at 78000. Oh by the way, when I first noticed the chattering, the dealer wanted to change the clutch packs ($$$$$$) but I chose to try the fluid change first. Can't imagine how many people have had needless maintenance done for no reason.
