What do you mean they are all toast? Are they burned up (melted) or just burned out (open circuit)? You're sure your controller isn't turning them on when it shouldn't be? Have you checked your relay to make sure it isn't sticking and keeping them turned on?
Where did you buy the plugs? I got a bad batch from a guy on eBay that burned out almost instantly like what you are describing.
From everything I've read Champions aren't any better than Autolites. Were the Motorcrafts the ones that say "Beru" and "Made in Germany" on them? Tell us more.....
i bought the plugs from autozone, and they said motocraft made in germany (zd1a). the controller never worked since i bought the truck and the relay is brand new. the only time my wts light comes on is when i manually push the button. what i mean by toasted is (burned out) open circuit all eight. i called autozone to see if i could bring them back and they told me no its an electrical part. so i waited to see if i could catch the person that sold them to me and finally i caught her working. she remembered selling me the plugs and told me if i brought the plugs and my reciept in she would give me a new set of plugs. guess what i cant find the damn reciept. i got on ebay and found a set of duel coil plugs from wellman, are they any good. and is $55.00 a bad price?

Well, from what I've read, Motorcraft has had their plugs made by several different factories. "Made in Germany" could mean they are Bosch plugs - which I have read aren't much better than the Autolites or Champions. With Motorcrafts, you have to get the ones that say "Beru" on them to get the good ones.
As for the Wellman brand, I haven't heard anything about them, but at $55 a set, that sounds pretty cheap. Anybody else ever heard of or tried them? I need a set for my turbo-ed truck, and might consider trying a set myself. The seller has a 99.9% positive rating, so they must work ro he'd have more complaints....

These things sound great. Self-temperature-regulating so that they don't burn out. Think I'm going to give a set of those a try myself. Heck, at that price I might just buy two sets - two sets of those plus $10 shipping will only be $37 more than a set of Motorcrafts plus tax....

hey cheeper im wanting to swap over to the solid state controller, i know my controller and plugs is a 6volt system. what year did they start with the 12volt system so i make sure i get the wright plugs to swap over to the solid state system, and they only had the new set up on the 7.3s?
thanks dave for the info on the wright plugs for that setup, as soon as i can get the extra money especialy after just spending $80.00 on new plugs ill swap it over to the new setup. just havent made up my mind if i want to go back with motrcfaft zd9s or the duel coil plugs by wellman. whats your suggestion on them dave? and trike im not for sure that they are not getting power but i dont see how because if they were then my wait to start light would have come on , and it never came on at any time.
I have good luck with the ZD 9 plugs I run now.
I also had good luck with the ZD1A plugs till the controller went out and burned them up.
With the location of the wait to start light and as tall as I am I normally would not have seen the light come on while driving, but I have a switch panel mounted below that for my dump bed. I noticed the light while reaching for a switch to lower the bed while I was driving.
Several people have posted about using other brands of glow plugs.
I have no experience with them first hand, and I probably never will.
more than likely ill probably go with the zd-9s because there just a go and pick them up kind of deal, instead of having to wait for them to come in when i get ready to buy them. and plus they have 24 of them in stock.
I've tried wellmans myself, and I wasn't impressed. After about two weeks three were dead. This might have been caused fact that my controller always gives a full 9 seconds no matter how warm or cold the engine is (I now have an AUTO-OFF-MAN switch). The remaning seven seem to be holding, for now. Now the good news, is that when they failed in the engine, there was almost no visible distortion, so pulling them was no problem. As for the dual coils, I desided to try and fail one.
I hooked up a single plug directly to a battery that was also on a trickle charger. After about 10 seconds, the plug had started to distort, at about 23 seconds, there was a small hiss and the plug was dead. Now the bad news here is that by the time it failed, it had swelled like a union! OK, it was a 1/4 inch, but still too large to be safely retreved if it had been installed in the engine. I also did not see any indication of self regulation during the test.
The info on the company website convinced me they were worth trying, the test made me return the remaning eight plugs.
is your controled still hooked up if so then they very well could have come on without you ever noticing them just unplug it from the head if still hooked inline
Hey guys, try Kennedy Diesel. I had a LOT of glow plug trouble with my late-not-so- great 6.2L GM. Kennedy offers some glow plugs that I used with a manual bypass system and I could literally glow for MINUTES at a time. They had a real narrow tip on the end. I'm not sure who made them or if he sells the same ones now, or if he has some that will work in a IDI Ford, but if someone want to try: http://www.kennedydiesel.com/
i just replaced a set of g-p's on a 91 three of which were champions, one tested open. the truck was in the shop prior to me getting it; they had replaced the controller and one g-p. Ibet it was a champion also since the one they replaced was on the same bank as the other three. All of the ones on the opposite bank had beru on them, three were good and one tested high high resistance.
of the last 2 idi's, i installed the motorcraft (beru) plugs and haven't had a come-back yet. They cost right at $10 each. i also ohm test the set before installation to make sure they're all consistant.
