Hello new to the forum.Ihave a problem that hopefully my fellow powerstrokers can help me with.I have a 96 f350 crewcab.I have 2 problems, the first one is that when i am driving down the road the engine starts to loose power and finally dies.could this be the cps or will the engine just die,the second problem that i have now is that when i startthe truck it will run for a couple of seconds then die.Ilookedat my my injector harness on the passenger side front connector when plugged in will smoke and one of the pins on the male connector is melted away.when i unplug the connector the truck starts fine but misses due to the connector being unplugged.it seems that i have a short, but nothing was touched or i did nothing different between these 2 problems.i have heard of changing out pins and connectors on previous threads, but were would the short coming from or is this what happens when the pins have to be replaced.
Any info would be greatly apperciated.
Welcome to FTE. You came to the right place for your troubles.
IS you check engine light on when it does run? If so, you need to get the codes and let us know. Some Autozones are capable of scanning our diesels. I brow beat the AZ guys near me to grab the one they are selling b4 I bought my own.
You may have only one problem. Burnt UVC (Under Valve Cover) gaskets.
You need to be sure your oil and fuel filter are fresh too. These engines need clean diesel rated oil to run properly (foaming oil won't work) because the injectors run on engine oil.
Click the link(s) in my signature and bookmark them. You can get all the part #'s and a repair manual too if you need it. But most of the guys here will set you on the right path to repairing your truck without too much $$ being spent.
Thanks for the info, but what is cousing the burning of the connector when plugged in seems that if i replace the connector that same problem may acure or is it that whatever is undernaeth the valve covers is shorting out.Is this a typical problem and do i replace pins on the gasket or the complete gasket it also says reusible gasket stamped on it.
Each connector powers 2 injectors and 2 GP's. There is an huge amount of power (115v) going to the injectors plus the glow plugs high AMP draw. They just get worn after 12 years of heat and vibratioin. If the connectors loosened and was run that way, the pins and/or the connector shells get even hotter.
You need to pull the valve covers and look for wire chaffing or looseness underneath too. I would replace all the harnesses and be don with it, at least for another 12 years.
Well i finally got a chance to work on the truck, replaced all harneesses under passenger valve cover gasket and burnt pins on connector.i went and took it for a test drive and it happened again.i wiil try to be a little more specific as to what happened at the time it died.driving all of a sudden truck would not pickup any more speed tried to downshift to hopefully try to acselerate but then it just completely lost power and died.no cel oil pressure did not change until it died, wait to start light would not come on when i tried to start it back up i do have a tach signal Let sit for a few minuts then it would start back up,but this time i still do not have a wait to start light.also my brother drove itand mentioned that it only died on him at freeway speeds as with me it drove fine in the city.i have heard that maybe old oil might be a factor i have not changed it yet sense i bought it from previus owner. Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.
May be EBPV, exhaust back pressure valve, if it's sticking it will cause the engine to run poorly under hard acceleration. There is a 2 wire connector under the turbo housing on the driver side, unplug it. This will not hurt your truck, many here, including me, have unplugged it an left it that way.
Change the oil & filt. Fresh oil will make it happy. Be sure to use diesel rated oil, rotella 15-40 or synthetic 5-40, delo 400 ect.
