I know this is one of those dead horse issues, but I have a fuel leak. I have fuel dripping off of the passenger side rear of the block. I am having trouble tracking it down. The fuel pump was replaced in '01. I have checked all of the fuel lines and they do not appear cracked. They too were replaced when I had the stealership replace the fuel pump (at least thats what I told them to do and they charged me for). It was under warranty then is why they did the pump. I have since learned to work on the truck myself. I have fuel in the valley and can't find the source. I have been up on top of the motor while it was running to see....nothing. I have taken the Y off to get a better look and could not see any fresh fuel leaking. I have been checking the other threads and the only thing I can think of is my fuel pump is leaking out of the weap holes?. I read when they leak the pump is getting ready to go. Any ideas guys/gals?
You need to start with a clean engine valley. Use a long screwdriver and shop towels to dry it up. The weep hole is very low in the valley and gets covered up quickly with fuel before it's noticed.
After a thorough cleaning start the engine and check for leaks. Use mirrors and lots of light.
BTW: a leaking FP will still pump for quite a while but the leak gets bigger.
ran engine for a bit. On the passenger side of the fuel pump I saw a little spray like coming from under the pump. It is VERY little but you can see it every so often. I wasn't even sure cuz it is so small that it looked like dust/dirt falling.
You have a new fuel pump in your future. It's doable with a little patience. The big warning is Don't let the FP tappet fall into the engine. You can loosen the fuel filter and move it towards the front of the engine, I prefer completely removing it.
I dont want to hijack your thread but I've had a fuel leak for some time now. I'm also positive that its the lift pump. My question is mine only seems to leak at start up. It will make a decent sized puddle on the ground during the first minute after start up.
I'm not too concerned about it. I'm just waiting for my lift pump to go but I dont think it ever will.
Thanks Jim I really appreciate the info. I plan on picking up the pump this week and attacking it friday after work. I'm off this coming weekend so it should give me a bit of time to tackle it. I'm gonna read that thread you sent so I don't have any questions while I'm under the hood. I got the tools, lights, HEATED garage, and patients (I hope) to get it done. Besides what's that old saying ......what could go wrong. Right? Oh I also plan on removing the fuel filter housing and FPR. I'm gonna clean both of them out. I also plan on replacing the fuel lines. A bit of insurance can't hurt.

My buddy had one that did the same thing and it lasted almost 2 years. The diesel smell in the cab was pretty bad because of the fuel left in the valley but he waited until it crapped out. He got his $$ worth out of it.
