what problems would a bad tfi module cause? I am thinking it's bad as the truck won't start. it will sputter like it's out of time. my timing gun is in storage and it ran fine till the other day. i have replaced: cap, rotor, wires, plugs, coil, air filter.
Well a bad TFI module will definitely cause a no start, maybe even the sputtering you are experiencing. Here is the link to the procedure I used to verify my dead TFI module.
You have to remove the distributor but no big problem, I marked the rotor position on the block and the module position on the motor mount that way I did not have to set the timing. Replaced the TFI module,as it tested bad, and the pickup coil as it had resistance out of spec. Reinstalled the distributor, turned the key and everything was back to running normal :-)
Mine went bad once, accidently hit it with a wrench. Was hard as all hell to start, and when it did, the timing was so messed up, it made it feel like the engine was running against itself, everything was real rough. Then it died and wouldnt start again. Replaced it for $20 and it worked just fine again.
