I am going to confirm what others are saying. RJ is right on. You buy the best sheet metal that you can get your hands on. Do not be afraid to travel for it, The best sheet metal will have the lowest end cost, have the least amount of work and be the best truck when all done.
My opinion is to get the 56. It has curb appeal. It seems to me like you will be able to fully enjoy the truck after power brakes, but i gurantee you'll get more compliments driving the 56 home than the 55.
1056,
I prefer 55's to 56's and I like big blocks. However, if I had to choose between these two I would have to go with the 56. It appears to be in better shape and it does have a big block. But, the newer paint job might just be icing on a bad cake. Best to check it carefully for bondo.
I agree go for the best sheet metal. I passed over a lot of trucks before I bought mine and I still have rust to take care of but not as much as the ones I passed on. ....................RUSTY
No way, man! Your travel expenses are considered "sunk" upon arrival at the truck. Sunk costs are gone -- you should only consider your future expenses at that point. If the truck is lame -- turn around and drive home. You will have saved thousands of bucks. Who cares about what you already spent on the trip at that point, it is irrelevant.
Sorry, I finally had a chance to regurgitate something I learned in B-school!
What he said. We drove 14 hours each way to see my 56 in person. Had it been junk, we would have turned around and come home. Mine was exactly as described and she came home with me. We drove 14 hours out and 14 hours home...non stop except for gas, food, and hooking up the truck (no hotels).
Consider it an investment and a huge savings if you return without a junker. Don't throw more money away.
The 56 looks better, but I see potential for a lot of bondo under that new looking paint. Be leery and check it really well before you hand over the cash. Most sellers are not as honest as the one I met.
