I'm doing a 302/c4 combo into a '55 f-100. My motor is a 1968 302 and I am wondering, will the bolt pattern of that 302 match up to say a '70 and up c4 bell housing? I'm asking because I've been shopping around for a TCI Streetfighter c4 trans and the only ones that I can find apply to '70 and up Ford small blocks. Will that year of transmission fit my application, and should I go with the small or large bell housing?
AFAIK a 302 bolt pattern is a 302 bolt pattern regardless of the year. Also, a 300/4.9l straight 6 has the same pattern. I think there is more but I am not too awake yet........ got into the wobbly pop last night...all started so innocently ...friend came over...went out to look at the project.....saw the beer fridge...the rest is history as they say.
302 is the small block bolt pattern, as well as 351W, 351C, 300, and a couple others. Finding a stock C4 shouldn't be hard. An Aod will bolt up, too. Have you searched thru this forum for this info, yet?
The engine will bolt up to later model transmissions. The bellhousing is the same for small blocks regardless, the linkage on the newer transmissions is different from that of the 68, which can be changed out or use of a cable type linkage for the shifter. Another difference is the oil tube, the older models had it in the case of the transmission. Some of the newer types especially your AOD, as the filling going into the oil pan, Big deal! I believe the overall length is slightly different and I would check on the yoke input at the rear of the tranny. Of course then again, the yoke is easy to replace on the driveshaft as well. OK, I'm talking too much, I'm going to the fridge like Sparky and try to forget what I'm talking about.
I think the Colonel is right on the 351C. If I recall, you can use the FMX or C6 transmissions for them.
I re-read the initial post, and since you already have the '68 302, I should mention that '68 broncos had C4 trannies behind them(or 3 sp. man.), so I don't know see why a TCI wouldn't fit, other than possible changes in starter location, flexplate size/TC bolt pattern, etc... I believe it was mid '64 when the 289 switched to the 6 bolt bell pattern. One other possibility is the '68 block doesn't have the bell crank bolt holes cast into it, like said above....but not positive.
One thing you need to know since you have a 68 302. You will need to know which flexplate to use with your c4 combo. Newer(1982+) 302's have a 50oz balanced 157 tooth flexplate. The older needs the 28 oz balanced plate.
