I don't know how long I stood in front of the TV's looking at them.
I ended up with a Panasonic 42" Plasma in the bedroom and a 50" Pioneer in the living room. I am very happy with both of them. I know they are not LCD's, but I really could not see any difference after a while.
I don't know how long I stood in front of the TV's looking at them.
That is what you do: Look at them, find the one with the picture and general appearance that you like, and buy it if you can afford it.
Forget all the numbers, etc. Just make sure it has the HD receiver in it not "HD ready" and you'll be set.
We bought an LG 37" for our living room (small, I mean small, house) and love the picture quality and sound.
I truly believe that the state of the art is such that any of your major players are producing a quality product. I would simply stay away from "ACME" brands that are substantially underpriced. Example: Circuit City had a Polaroid LCD TV on sale cheaper than all the others. Now I don't know who builds it for Polaraoid, but as far as I know, Polaroid doesn't build its own tvs. It looked fine, but I was just leery of buying that brand knowing (strongly suspecting) that it was built by an unidentified third party.
Sony, Magnavox, Zenith, LG, etc. will be fine I predict.
Yeah, go and look at them in the store, but remember that it is a lot darker in the store than in your home on most occasions.
I just bought a Sony Bravada LCD 40 inch to replace the old 27 inch JVC CRT TV. I have a 65 inch Mitsubishi DLP in my family room and it is the best picture I have seen.
There are some places that you can go to see what other people are saying about their TV’s. Of coarse there is Consumer Reports, but there is also one called www.epinions.com that people leave their reactions of items.
OR you could do what I did and bring your wife and have her tell you which one to buy!
I have the Samsung 40" LCD (720p). Great picture, and I got a great deal. I narrowed it down based on features/prices I liked/wanted, then I went and looked at the various models in the store.
Keep in mind that pretty much all of these TVs have a "Shop Mode", where it's turned up brighter than blazes to draw your attention. This will shorten the life of virtually all TVs. Turn down the brightness and contrast before you look at it.
Consider also your viewing distance when looking at size. For the room I'm in, a 40-46" TV is appropriate, a 51+" would be too large--I would start seeing individual scan lines or pixels. Google "TV viewing distance" or something similar to find some calculators. HD content is easier to see when it's smaller and farther away due to the increased clarity and detail.
Just remember that often regular TV (non-HD) will look worse on the larger, better TVs. The extra size highlights the shortcomings. It's a compromise, but dang, the Colts look good in HD!
I bought a 42 inch panasonic plasma over the holidays. it seeemed to look better for SD content. Since most of what I watch is SD, that's a big deal for me. No regrets yet.
Look at the Panasonic 42 inch TH-42PX60U plasma. It has gotten great reviews. It has awesome black levels, is supposed to be the best for SD, and can accept up to a 1080p signal so you're set for the future.
We bought one on black Friday and I have never regretted it.
