well i got a little extra money, and i'm thinking about replacing my tv. its is a RCA 27" home theatre series about 10 yrs olds , great tv but its time to upgrade i'm looking for a 32 or 36 flat screen , hd ready and it has to have sound leveling . i hate it when you have the volume set right where you want it.......then a comercial comes on and blasts you.... and i know that RCA is not the same company that it once was....and my budject is somewhere between 700 & 1000.....any ideas anyone? sound & gimicks are not what i want , picture is important.....
The best thing to do is go to any of the mega stores that have every conceivable model and look at them to see what YOU like...
What we like and the numbers are not meaningful if you don't like it...
Take advantage of the big stores for that at least - then you can buy it from where you want - Mom and Pop store, on line with free shipping...
The Sony Wega's are stunning for the price... and if you're not talking big screen there are a LOT of choices in your price range...
sony wega, sony wega, i sold tvs for over 15 years and they are a great ty with (in my opinion) the best picture out there. the only problem with an hdtv ready set is most of them in that price range will by a 4x3 aspect ratio(hdtv is 16x9) which means that when you watch an hdtv picture on it, it will have those black bars on the top and bottom, or the sides of the picture will be cut off. as far as the sound leveling goes, it is not all it is cracked up to be. when it is on it is always on and is constantly trying to keep the sound at the same level, so the sound is always getting louder and quieter because the ty is trying to keep up with what is happening on the show. i have it on 2 of my tvs and i never use it
I agree with Dennis about the Toshiba. The newer Toshibas get very good ratings.
I recently bought a Toshiba 51" RPHDTV and it is really good.
Lately I've heard quite a few bad things about Sony. Apparently they arent as good as they used to be.
I agree with the idea of walking into (insert your local electronics superstore here) and looking at all the televisions. They are all usually displaying the same video so that you can get an idea of what you like and don't like. Heh, I usually end up picking out the most expensive box because it has the nicest picture.. then I sigh when I realize I don't have the money to buy it. In that respect, my one 29" RCA that's 6 or 7 years old is still going strong. I won't be buying anything for the next several years, but its nice to see the HDTV and flat screen prices coming down. I'm sure that when they are affordable, something big and great will be out there for us to drool over. Oh, my other favorite "television".. my hauppage TV Tuner card in my PC.. I don't have to miss any shows if I'm busy at home with work or just surfin' FTE..
I've been hearing the same thing about Sony's quality not being what it used to be. For what its worth...I bought a Toshiba 27" (not a flat screen) 5 or 6 years ago, and have had great luck with it. I was told at the time...buy a friend that runs a repair shop, that it was a lot of TV for the money...he was right.
I agree on the quality of Sony TVs. I work on TVs as a hobby, and the Sony TVs coming out of Mexico do not have the quality that the Japanese manufactured ones had years ago. I'm basing this from the alignment of SMT components, solder joint quality, etc. .....
I have to disagree with walking into a mega superstore such as Best buy, Circuit City, Good Guys, etc and baseing your purchase based on what you see there, for a couple of reasons:
1. The people who work there are usually very ignorant about thier products.
2. Because of reason #1, and because of the bright lighting in the store, they set the contrast and brightness WAY TOO High. Without adjusting each TV to it's optimum setting, you will never know which has the best picture. When you compare a few TVs, skin tones are probably the easiest to compare. On one TV, a person may look really pale, and no so much on another. However, vast differences are not because of the TVs, it 's the TV's settings.
If you want to truely compare TVs, go to a a high-end specialty electronics store to do it. Then decise which one you want, and look for it cheaper somewhere else if you want to.
In my humble opinion, the best TV's are usually (excluding the extremly pricey Fajorda and Runco):
1. Pioneer (elite and then the non-elite series)
2. Toshiba
4. Mitsubishi
5. Sony
Yes, he will not get a high-end TV for that amount of money, but a lot of high end stores also carry normaly priced TVs, and they usually adjust them correctly.
One thing I should have mentioned is that the number, type and locations of input/output connections are an important consideration.
The only brand I've had bad experiences with is Samsung. Great picture and features for the money, but something always to go wrong.
Sounds like this subject ranks right up there with....
Oil preferences !!!
Sorry, I will bow out now - just trying to help - not start a heated discussion...
Each of our needs are unique... I am not a high end tv watcher...
there's a reason I still call it the boob tube... maybe different from when it was originally coined, but it is still the bOOb tube :-)
Sony is the only way to go in electronics. I think they are a little more expensive. (that may be because my tv was bought when i was stationed in japan) but definitly worth it.
