Just wandering what the tipical engine life for a well-maintained 302 is? The truck currently has 145,000 on it. How far down the road am I looking at putting an engine in it?
There are folks on here that have reported 300k on a 302 that was in a truck that was just used for transportation and not used as a truck pulling or carrying heavy loads. 200k should be easy!
My father owned a 90' F-150 and it had over 200k miles on it, and it had dump-bed on it and was used as a dump truck for his buisness. It put a hole in the piston one day on the highway while on the way home from work. As it was leaking oil out of every possible hole, he drove it 20 more miles home. Replaced the motor with one that had about 100k on it. I now own the truck and all I had to do was replace the starter after I went mudding and got alittle carried away.
77 t-bird, 302/C4. weekend racer for most of its life. Rotella T 15w40, BigT auto brand filters...changed every 2500 miles. given to me a few years ago to clean up yard. 385739...cam ran flat when started after sitting 8 yrs. Still pulled in shop under own power with 5 cyl w/ less than 60 psi cranking pressure.
Just sold a 1996 F150 SC 4x4 with 245,000 miles. Did not leak or burn any oil. Still looked and drove like new. Oil changed every 5,000 miles since new.
My '83 F100 302 has 217,000 on it and runs just fine. It was a light duty farm truck for 14 years ans since then I have have just used it for daily transportation. It has been well maintained since new and not abused and that is the key to survival.
The one in my Mustang has 160,000 hard miles on it. Lots of racing and I used to run nitrous on it. Still runs strong. Should go well over 200,000. My 77 F100 302 has over 242,000 miles on it.
I had a 89 ford 4x4 with 485,000 kms on it and when I sold it it didnt burn oil, and ran really well, I still see it driving around. I sold it about two years ago now too.
