1989 Bronco Power Window/Lock Problem

I just bought a 1989 Bronco. Everything is great except the power window on the driver side and the power lock on the passenger side do not work. I took off the door panels and the wiring appears to be in good shape. When I press the window or lock button, it doesn't seem like any electrical signal is getting through. Is there anything more I can do to diagnose & fix the problem?

Thanks,

Joe Orenstein

1989 Bronco Power Window/Lock Problem

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 07-Jul-02 AT 10:50 PM (EST)]Probably the switches are bad. Check for voltage to be sure though. Go to the salvage yard and you can pull the switches straight out of the harness. '87 to '91 F series and Bronco will work. I just did my door lock switch on Friday!

The window problem is probably the motor if nothing is happening when you press the window button. There are 2 wires going from the window switch to the window motor(pigtail on the bottom of the motor). Unhook the connector and test the switch with a voltmeter. You should get 12 volts when you depress the switch. If you don't, it's the switch, if you do, it's the window motor.

I just replaced both my window motors and they only cost $50 each with a lifetime warranty.

Check the door lock switch the same way, and I'm sure the door lock mechanism isn't too expensive either.

How hard is it to switch the window motors in the driver and passenger doors? Could you give me a run down on doing it?

It isn't too bad at all. Pull the door panels, carefully
remove the moisture shield. Your motor is then visible inside the door. There are dimpels hiding one or two of the three mounting screws. Drill out those dimpels large enough to get a socket wrench in there to unbolt the motor. Caution!! Support the window with a board so it won't drop down when you take out the motor. Then just remove and replace. Lubricate all moving parts while your inside the door, maybe even upgrade the speakers! New window weather strip and belt line weather strip. Check for rust in the bottom of the doors, run a small magnet along the inside bottom, clean and paint or rustproof. Do all this at once instead of pulling the door panels all the time like I do!!
